Monash Law vs. Melbourne Law

Hey all,

I am tossing up between doing com/law at monash and doing a post graduate JD at Melbourne where I have a guarantee (99+)

Is there any real advantage either way, LLB vs JD, in terms of the degree itself and prospective jobs and the like?

Thanks

Yeah i have thanks,
if the difference is minimal i will most likely end up choosing Monash, at least i will be able to do some law subjects in the first 3 years as opposed to unimelb

Oh and for comm/law there are some places that only take graduates who have done commerce and law. I know a family friend who did the double degree and is going very well for herself, but they are a minority.

I was in a similar position last year (but for me it was a no-brainer). doesn't the guaranteed thing have a bunch of conditions, and is only a guaranteed full fee place? regardless, if you can get into monash commlaw and you know you want law why wait 3 years?

Thanks burbs your reply makes a lot of sense. Law is what I really want to do and Monash seems the best option. How are you finding it?

I think Melb took out the guaranteed full-fee place for 99+ for JD and MD; correct me if I'm wrong though... :)

Ggxoxo they still have the guarantee I called them today.

Thanks for your help everyone, after some deliberation I have decided to go to Monash.

Which university is closer for you?

Both are substantially the same and I doubt you would be disadvantaged by choosing one over the other.

One thing to keep in mind is that at Monash if you do a double degree you will be at uni for 5-6 years doing law compared to only 3 years doing law at Melbourne. I was only just thinking about this recently but spending twice as long at Monash really just lets you do twice as much law related extra-curriculars/networking/etc. I think this is an advantage Monash grads have which isn't always considered (also you could probably better balance doing extra curriculars given you won't be doing a full load of law subjects like at Melbourne).

I am closer to Melbourne but transport isn't a big deal for me. I am choosing Monash bec it is law that I really want to do and as you said there's 6 years of law at Monash as opposed to 3 at Melbourne.
Also the guaranteed place at Melbourne is for a full fee place only so Monash is a better choice for me.

Thanks for you help
