I haven't moved on guys!!! People just stopped responding as much so I gave up posting... There's not really any other reason for me to come on here. I guess I can give some advice to people, but other than that there isn't much incentive. Plus I hate being reminded of the horror that was year 12 (90% horror, 10% rainbows and unicorns ;) ).

Gosh has anyone else been tutoring their siblings over the holidays??

I've been tutoring my little brother, trying to help him prepare for that selec-entry school exam I did 5 years ago.

Finding it pretty tough, he doesn't get any of the homework I give him done, and is extremely lazy. He treats my tuition work and input as just additional stuff, doesn't really care about it. He goes to two other tutoring places and seems to treat them properly, but not me.

And the other thing is that I don't really think he has that determination and desire to do well in the exam. Me five years ago wanted to ace that exam so badly, so I worked hard for it. If you don't want something, it's really unlikely you'll do well.

Anyway just sharing some of my problems over the break... Any suggestions on how I can be better help to him? Or convince him to do better? He goes to the same school as I did before I moved to a better school, it's ranked 450th I think, and the dux ATAR is always under 80.... So I really want him to do well in this exam and go to a better school.

2013-2014:| VCE
2015-2018:| Bachelor of Science (Neuroscience) @ UoM
2019-X:| Doctor of Dental Surgery (discontinued)
2019 -2021:| Master of Physiotherapy

Currently: Physiotherapist working at a musculoskeletal clinic. Back pain, sore neck, headaches or any other pain limiting your study? Give me a PM (although please do see your personal health professional first!)

Any questions related to pathways towards studying dentistry or physiotherapy? Gimmi a PM!

Substance! Something to read!  ;D ;D

Nah I haven't been doing anything like that. However, my sister is pretty similar... I've been trying to tell her how much better year 11 is (than year 10) but she won't listen. Doesn't really seem to care about getting into her holiday homework or anything either.

If anything, just tell him how much of a difference the school can make and perhaps show him some various pieces of proof. Another thing that you could try to do is convince him by showing him pictures etc of the 'great facilities' at the new school. I dunno. It's difficult to be truly motivated as a 13/14 year old (in my opinion).

For the select entry test when I did it, my mum didn't put any pressure on me. Like she was like "idc if you get in or not" but I knew secretly she cared so much. It's a bit of reverse psychology/manipulation; don't force them straight up - I think if you exert too much pressure/expectation on your sister, she might take it differently. So relieve her a bit pressure, I recond. It's 8 months away, isn't it?

Agreed! I was in a similar situation too, my parents didn't actually care whether I got in or not (I only decided to sign up just before the cut-off date). They care about my studies not about what school I go to, and even if I did get in, they gave me the option of staying back in my old school.

I think being composed and prepared before the exam really helped. No point over-dramatizing the exam because it’s not an accurate measurement of academic capability (the exam is more of a strategic matter in my opinion apart from the writing section).

Three years later, the school feels like any other ordinary school  :P (yes, I did go to an ordinary suburban public school before-not Balwyn/Glenny league).

If he’s going to two tutoring places he should be more than fine  :)

LOL yeah, for me the selective entrance exam is pretty stupid in that the total time they give you for each section is so little that very few could finish. Also, what is the point of assessing whether some one can write a story in 15 minutes? Someone who can write a stellar story in 15 minutes might screw up if you made them do a full (1 hour) one...

So at the end of the day, there is so much blank luck - as to whether you choose a,b,c,d,e for the questions you couldn't do. I recond I got in because I chose D for everything I couldn't do (instead of C) lol because I left out like 25 questions for each section.
