I'm a big believer in quality not quantity, but with maths its all about the application of your knowledge. The more you are exposed to different questions, the more your start to notice a repetition in the style of certain questions, the more you are comfortable with sitting an exam. Particularly when they're timed, doing as many practice exams as possible is a good idea. Why would you disagree?

That is SO true. I mean you do sort of notice the same sort of questions for least squares regression line (e.g. Coefficient of determination and how variation in DV can be explained by the IV). Then again, completing a lot of exams means more opportunities to exploit your knowledge of Further Maths content :) both arithmetic and theory!!

My school uses the Essential Further Maths textbook. However, should I perhaps purchase Maths Quest for Further Maths or Heinemann Further Maths for extra practice, or not really?! Advice would be appreciated :)

It probably isn't necessary.

Yeah Stick I thought so because I mean I have the Essential textbook, heaps of practice exams + lots and lots of resources to practice from. :)

I've finished the Further Maths course during these holidays (i.e. the Core + Number Patterns + Graphs and Relations + Matrices). This first go of Further was really to establish an understanding of the concepts I will be looking at and a chance to fill in a bit of my bound reference. It has enabled me to take note of potential muddle-ups one can make (e.g. correlation coefficient calculated from a coefficient of determination; you always get a positive answer, but depending on the direction of the scatterplot is imperative to know whether its a positive relation ( + correlation coefficient) or negative relationship (- correlation coefficient).

Am I doing the right thing by now going through and repeating the course during the year in another notebook with the pace of my class, or would I be wasting my time. I practically know how to do a practice exam, and I want my priorities (for now) to be to ACE my SACS. Advice would be much appreciated? :) Thank you!

If you have access to them, it's better to do copious amounts of practice exams rather than do the course. If there are areas you're not 100% on, you should re-do those parts of the textbook course, but other than that I don't suggest spending a lot of time repeating it. Whenever you do a past VCAA exam, pay a lot of attention to details - the kinds of trick questions they put in, the types of questions that come up every year, and the types of questions a majority of the state have trouble with, based on assessment reports. Knowing VCAA exams inside out will help a lot.

That is a good point @Calvin Climb. I should probably only redo the areas of the modules or the Core which I am not 100% good in. Other than that, I really plan on acing my SACS and the practice tests my teacher gives for each chapter (made up of multiple choice/short answer - ultimately like good practice for exams). Would that be adequate. Although I cannot ensure this, I am hungry for a 50 in Further Maths lol! Oh well, we'll see how I go :D

Hi guys my Further Maths teacher gave the class a test on Chapter One covering Summarising and Displaying Data. I'm so annoyed about the fact that I got 39/40 for the test because my teacher believed I got a wrong answer in the multiple choice. What do you think the answer is?

The variable VCE ENTER SCORE is an example of:
(a) continuous numerical
(b) discrete numerical
(c) continuous categorical
(d) discrete categorical
(e) none of the above.

I chose (a) because you do in fact measure an ENTER SCORE and it can be a decimal point value. She believes it is discrete (b). ??

b makes sense since it can only be a finite number of values (ie 90.00, 90.05, 90.10 etc).

Oh yeah, I guess that's fair enough. Oh well, I better have a more logical approach to such questions in the future. Just so gutted because it was a really easy paper. Luckily I got full marks for the short-answer component, which is ultimately what makes up my SAC.

Hi guys,

Okay so my next Further SAC is a continuation of the first part on Univariate Data; the second component of the Further Core SAC is Regression, and the variable I am 100% of is Tennis Player Heights, and the other is probably going to be Weight :)

Height = Independent Variable
Weight = Dependent Variable

I would expect a linear, strong, positive relationship because as height increases, weight increases also.

Just clarifying because my SAC is coming up soon and I want to ensure I've got it right. :) Thanks

I don't think it would be a strong relationship between height and weight. There are many other variables that would affect weight (type of built, nationality, genes etc). You would probably find a moderate relationship.
