Methods concerns?

Hi everyone

I've been contemplating whether or not to do methods. Early on last year(semester 1) I was falling behind and averaging D's and C's in my maths and ended up getting 49% on the exam. However, in semester 2 I tried very hard and ended up getting 88% in the advanced trigonometry exam and 85% in the end of year exam, and earned myself B+'s and an A. I'm interesting in doing a degree in engineering or science, and wondering if I choose methods it will be to hard for me and I wont understand, thus I will fail the units.

What do you guys/girls reckon?

Thank you

You may as well try it out. If it's too hard or you don't like it, you can always pick up another subject  :)

You seem to be on the up. Do it.

(As long as we are talking Year 11, Methods 1/2, right?)

Definitely give it a shot. The 3/4 is generally a prerequisite for science/engineering courses, so it's worth doing it if you're interested in that field.

just wanted to say that i was getting C+'s for units 1/2. its very very normal for people to score much lower in yr 11 because methods is so different to all the maths you do in yr 10 and below

I was in an almost identical situation to you. In semester 1 year 10, I was averaging around 60% and I even scored 33% on my "graphing quadratics" test. In semester 2, I started to improve rapidly and I got my average mark up to around 90%. Then in year 11 and 12, I started to find methods a lot easier and I was coping fine. It ended up being my best subject.

I think you should at least try units 1/2 methods. It's not as hard as you think, and units 3/4 is mostly just a repeat of units 1/2. If you really hate it, you can drop it at the end of the year.

I'm assuming you're enrolling into unit 1 & 2?

Go for it. If you really don't like it by the end of the year, you can always drop it, though the fact that you managed to get your marks up to a B+ - A range is proof enough that you're capable of putting in the effort to succeed in methods. Also, like many people said, it's very common to get low marks to begin with, but it's possible to overcome this and improve. Also, you might want to consider whether methods is a prerequisite for a course that you're interested in getting into, seeing as that's one of the main reasons I'm doing it. :P

Good luck. :) Hopefully you'll make the right choice.

Definitely do it. If I could go back and time, you would definitely see Methods in my signature now.

Do it :)

1. Engineering is really maths-based and if I'm not wrong, requires methods as a prereq. Not sure about this, but I know (from relatives in engineering line) that doing maths in vce is really helpful as a kind of introduction.

2. You said that you were falling behind in sem 1 and picked up in sem 2, increasing your grades drastically. That probably means that you've got the ability for it, it's just a matter of working hard. I don't think you're going to fail, provided that you don't fall behind.

3. You should at least give it a go. If you don't like it, you can always transfer out in Units 1/2. Note that the course in 1/2 is very different from 3/4 though, and to many people 3/4 is actually easier (like to me :P).

Hope this helps :)

I definitely think you should do it if you want to do engineering.

you certainly have the potential so why not, plus as people have said it is a prerequisite for engineering. you really should give it a go!
