"Like" Posts
Mr Keshy:
I'm sure this has been discussed a fair bit but I was wondering if we'd ever be interested in a "like" button system in our forums.
In my opinion, respect should be used and rewarded to people who help others in regards to VCE. We have heaps of funny guys on these forums, and they make heaps of good calls but I think that kind of unbalances the respect system from it's real use.
There is a plugin for SMF called Thank-O-Matic... What that does (I believe) is give you the option to "thank" a post made by someone. In this case, a thank could be for making a good call :P.
I think that when it's installed, there is a menu that pops up under our names that shows number of times thanked, but I think it can be disabled.
Anyway, I think this could let people give +1 respect to those who help out the community and thank people for making the forums a funnier and as a result, a better place. :)
Obviously implementing this takes time and I respect that :) I was just wondering if anyone agrees with me.

Yes I agree! So many times I've +1'ed a user because of something funny they've said.. And a lot of the posts that get the most likes are usually funny, witty, etc.. It kinda defeats the point of giving 'respect' for things that actually deserve respect, such as motivational words, etc.

Are you just going through the list of SMF plug-ins and finding ones that might work with AN? haha
Personally I think two systems is just confusing. Most of the threads that are supposed to be funny or for casual discussions are in non-respect boards anyway.

I also think it might a bit confusing and unless we constantly remind people, they wont get the distinction that "Like" is only for funny posts and that "+1" is only for helpful posts.
I can see the two blurring together, we have some useful posts "liked" and people dont get respect for it (which actually isn't meaningless, its in our tutor ads too now) or it could go the opposite way and people could still "+1" funny posts.
If it works out in theory like you said it would and its certainly not a *bad* idea but i'm not sure how well it'll pan out in actuality...

Yeah, of course, they're absolutely nothing wrong with funny posts :), I just think they should be differentiated from the more educational ones :)

Haha, nah not really :) But what's wrong in that haha!
I frequent a few forums and they all run different software (vBulletin, phBB, SMF), lots of them have different features in them and when I see one that may benefit us, I ask :) Like now :D
I'm not sure I agree with it being confused to be honest. There would be two different buttons, hit one if it's helpful, hit the other if it's funny. If Brendan posts, hit both :P..
I agree that most funny threads are in the respect disabled sections, however some epic funny posts have been spotted in the enabled areas :P.
