Sci should be MTH1030 and 2010, PHS1011 and PHS1022
If you didn't do specialist do MTH1020 and MTH1030 instead of above

I did spesh. So I'm gonna choose the subjects above for science..and for aerospace eng, are the subjects standard?

If you have interests elsewhere in Science, you can pursue them (at least in first year). I know a few Aero/Sci kids who did Chemistry or Astronomy

ok I've found them now...checking every single one :)

I dont want to do chem if possible..and I'm definitely considering doing astronomy in the first year.

For my Aero/Sci 1st year, I did

Semester 1
MTH1030, ASP1010, PHS1080 (or PHS1011 if you did VCE Physics), ENG1060.

Semester 2
MTH2010, ASP1022, PHS1022, MAE1042.

If you have an interest in Astronomy and had been reading up ALOT on astronomy prior to this, I'd recommend that you do ASP2011 in semester 1. However if you're new to astronomy and have just a basic understanding of the celestial coordinate system, orbital mechanics, name/properties of planets etc. etc.. I'll recommend ASP1010 as it covers more introductory stuff.

ASP1022 is a massive waste of time in my opinion as its more like an uni covering the culture of astronomy instead of actual astronomy. There's people who enjoys it though so idk but all of the astronomy subjects are a buldge subject compared to the engineering/physics/maths units.

Hey guys I need some help with units and thought I'd use this thread instead of making a new one as I am doing this double degree :)

Do I HAVE to select one set of science units from the list in the handbook here http://monash.edu/pubs/handbooks/courses/3278.html ? As in, I know I have to select some electives, but does it have to be from that list? Are there other options?

If not, would it be wise to choose the Chemistry elective from the course handbook? I have not completed VCE chemistry, but I want a foundation in chemistry for later on in my degree as I have been told this would be a good idea. I think you might have told me this JinXi. Not only that but I want to broaden my knowledge in science anyway so doing chemistry is the logical choice. Would this put a lot of pressure on me, would it be too hard having no background in chem? It doesn't have any pre reqs.

Also, I'm a little hesitant to select any units until I go to the course info sesh tomorrow at Monash because I'm not sure which ones I'm allowed to do ect etc. Basically I just dont have enough knowledge on units yet. But I want to ask, once I choose units in WES and submit them completing my enrollment, hence accepting the offer, can I go back here and change units later if I change my mind?

I believe that if you do chemistry major in first year, the only way you can escape overloading in a later semester is to major in physics an Maths or double major in Maths.

Even majoring in chem would require another two semester of overloading in second year. However, a good foundation in chemistry does help in thermodynamics and materials related units so it might be worth overloading for it.

About WES, you can add/drop units up till the end of second week of the semester, and can discontinue units before the census date (sometime in April I think) without any penalties. So yeah, you can actually try out the different lectures during your first two weeks and see which one you like and change accordingly. Just take note that some units may have assessments in second week. Do enrol in some random units before your enrollment date ends though to secure your spot.

Thanks JinXi :) I ended up getting most of these queries settled today at the info sesh. I don't plan on proceeding further with chemistry after first year, I'm just doing CHM1011 & CHM1022 in first year as my science pair elective so I have the background for my later year ENG subjects. From second year and onwards I would like to pursue my interests in Quantam Mechanics, General and Special Relativity as much as possible.

Culture of astronomy? Never heard of that before.

There's only a few weeks of actual astronomy in it, granted. The rest is about life in the universe (which is what the entire unit is about), so theres bits of biology (evolution), geology, artficial intelligence, etc.

I don't know what others feel about that unit but I felt that it was a major waste of time (with the exception of Andrew Prentice lectures).  What I meant by the culture of astronomy is that  it isn't actual astronomy. We were learning about what others think about movies that spawned from astronomy.

Well just not my cup of tea.

P.S. I just took a look at the archived handbook and it seems that the coordinator for 2011 and 2012 had changed. So my information may not be accurate anymore. (John Lattanzio and Simon Campbell lecturing style didn't suit me as well)

Yes you need 6 points of physics from the first year..so it's a second year subject...
