Subject Selection/Not doing Breadth 1st Year

Hi all

I just wanted to confirm if it was possible to have these subjects for 1st year BSc?

Sem 1:
Accelerated Mathematics 1
Chem 1
Engineering System Design 1
Intro to Physics

Sem 2:
Accelerated Mathematics 2
Chem 2
Engineering System Design 2
Phys 1

I didn't do Physics in Year 12, so I wanted to be able to keep All engineering majors open, as well as maths and chemistry. Are these the right subjects? Does it matter that I have no breadth for 1st year? If it helps I did a tertiary language subject this year through UoM, so technically I've done 2 breadths already

For breadth out of the 6 subjects allocated to the latter, you have 2 for which can be from your own faculty if you wish. So those subjects are possible. However, the other 4 subjects for the rest of your degree need to be from a non Science/Biomedical Science faculty.

Those subjects look fine. But Hancock is right, Physics Fundamentals is a fast tracked course straight to Physics 2 in second semester.

You cannot use Uni subjects as part of your Year 12 to credit towards your Bachelors degree. The only overlap is for instance, if you did Chinese 1A and Chinese 1B in year 12, then it will be considered as satisfying the pre-requisites to advance to do Chinese 2A and 2B during your Bachelors degree.

Physics 1 isn't on offer in Semester 2. You can, however, progress straight into Physics 2 from Physics: Fundamentals if you get an H1 in the latter.

To be honest though, looking at your mathematics marks from VCE, I would actually recommend emailing the physics department at UniMelb and asking if you can go straight into Physics 1. You'll have to work a bit harder, but I think you'd be better off.

Other than that, everything looks fine. Of course, you will *have* to do an average of one breadth each semester for the remaining two years of your degree - make sure that doesn't mess up the rest of your course plan!

I don't think that is the case. I received an email from the extension subjects (uni subjects in year 12) co-ordinator explaining that I can certainly get credit for them.

No probs, just make sure you cite your VCE mathematics marks in the email and also maybe mention that you're doing Accelerated Maths too =)

Aurelian, I think you're getting confused with the path from Chem Fundamentals -> Chem 2.

All you need to do to progress from Fundy Physics to Physics 2 is pass.

But I feel I should warn you - Accelerated Maths is crazily fast-paced and involves no extra credit. As I found out after completing AM1, you're by no means obliged to do it if you have a certain study score. In addition, the emphasis on theory in the Real Analysis component of AM2 may not be appealing to a person doing a more applied major such as engineering. Unless you're really keen on pushing yourself, I'd actually recommend against doing it. Doing Calc 2 and Lin Alg separately is likely to give your average a boost.

On the upside, AM2 has the most hilarious lecturer ever, Barry Hughes.

Yeah I've heard similar regarding AM1...but I'm pretty keen to do it. Most likely going to be majoring in maths..engineering is only a back up

I sent the physics department an email anyway...bloody difficult email to send without coming across as an obnoxious prick, which I think I've done anyway... "hi I want special treatment because I got bla bla in vce..."
I've probably just made a joke out of myself to the physics department... #yoloswag
