Noob public transport user here. Once I get off the train at Melbourne Central, what exits/trams/routes do I need to take?

Take any tram that goes up Swanston St. That'll be the exit leading from the giant clock you see at MC.

There are two exits you can take when you get off the train at MC, the Swanston St exit (leads you through MC clocktower) and the Elizabeth St exit.

Most people take the Swanston St exit where you can take any tram  on the MC side (the other side is the State Library where you get off when coming back from uni) up to uni and these trams come really often every 30s-2mins unless there is some sort of breakdown somewhere.

If you have a lecture or class closer to the Biomed lib/Copeland theartre side of uni, you can save 5mins of walking time by taking the 19 North Coburg tram from Elizabeth Street :)

So if I want to get to the commerce department, I get off the tram stop at Lincoln Square/Pelham St right? Or would it be quicker to exit Elizabeth St and take a tram to the Haymarket/Pelham St?

If you are going on a train line that stops at North Melbourne. You could also catch the 401 bus (comes every 4 min or something like that)  from there and it will take you directly to the University on Grattan Street.

WHY NOT
Cos it's freaking lame as.
Takes you halfway to Melb Uni and everyone has to get off cos it's the last stop... So you have to try getting on the next tram, but more than likely it's already packed like sardines so you either squeeze in if you can or walk the rest of the way... Or if you have the time and are patient enough wait for a tram that has room.
Just don't do it.

57 stops at vic market and goes to north melbourne. it doesnt pass melb uni. 59 stops at flemington road so its convenient for commerce. otherwise u only need to walk an extra 50-100metres to get to the uni for people doing biomed or whatever
