bcom course plan questions

I’m going to do a Bachelor of Commerce and intend to major in Accounting and Finance. My course plan currently looks something like this:

Year 1 – Introductory Microeconomics
Quantitative Methods 1
Introductory Microeconomics
Accounting Reports and Analysis
Introductory Financial Accounting
Accounting Processes and Analysis
Principles of Business Law
Finance 1

Year 2 – Organisational Behaviour
Quantitative Methods 2
Cost Management
Intermediate Financial Accounting
Business Finance
Corporate Law
(Core Program Elective)
(Breadth subject)

Year 3 – Financial Accounting Theory
Enterprise Performance Management
Auditing and Assurance Services
Investments
Derivative Securities
Corporate Finance
Basic Econometrics
Taxation Law I

I have the following questions/queries:
1) I know that Finance 1 is not a prerequisite for anything, but does it really matter if I do it anyway. I could take another subject, but nothing really takes my fancy.

2) Following on from this, does it matter that I would only be doing one breadth subject in the first year? Or is it compulsory to do 2?

3) I’m confused about Taxation Law II (level 3). It’s a summer subject, but does this count towards the 300 points? Anyway, the third year is full – with 3 accounting, 3 finance, taxation law I, and basic econometrics (necessary for honors). Therefore am I able to somehow complete taxation law II as well? Can you go over the 300 point limit? Also would it then be done at the beginning of the fourth year (2016)?

If any of you guys can help me out here, that would be awesome!

Study plan looks good (you can't really go wrong with acct/finance, the course is very set as there are so many subjects you have to do for CA and major so there's not a lot of choice anyway.

1) You do have to do Finance 1, it's a pre-req for Business finance unless you do a maths subject and accounting subject see https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/current/FNCE20001

2) Nope that's fine

3) It does count towards the 300 points and you an *only* do 300 points in the Bcom, no more, no less. Best bet is to do Bus Fi in first semester second year then do one of the finance third year major subject in second semester second year giving you room to do tax law in third year.

Hope that helps :)

1) Wouldn't Quantitative Methods 1 and one of my accounting subjects in the first year satisfy the pre-requisite anyway? To be honest I still think I'll do Finance 1 regardless.

2) Sweet

3) Ok that sounds good. I wasn't sure about the logistics of doing a level 3 subject in 2nd year. Are there any set requirements for doing that?

Thanks so much for your help!

1) oh yeah, my bad, didn't see that, just testing you :P

3) nope, as long as you've done the pre-reques it's fine, it's not like overloading where you need to get specific permission, it's very common actually as lots of people like to spread out their 3rd year subjects.

No problem :)
