Breadth and timetable
« on: January 29, 2013, 01:00:59 am »

Hey guys, do i have to take a level 1 breadth in the first year? Because i am planning to do 2 level 2 breadths.

Also, i am doing a biomedicine course and was wondering if anyone could help me out by coming up with a timetable for me that would be my best option as i am completely lost with it.

doing biomed with subjects: biomolecules & cells. chem for biomed. maths for biomed and classical mythology.

Thanks

You can't take any level 2 classes until Semester 1 of your first year. You must first complete 50 points (4 subjects) before taking "next" level classes.

Anybody correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't have to do level 1 breadths, as long as you meet the breadth requirements for level 2 and 3.

The handbook says:

"50 points of breadth including at least 12.5 points at Level 2 or 3 and no more than 37.5 points at Level 1."

That been said, quite a handful of level 2 & 3 breadths require associated level 1 breadths as a pre-requesite.

But I believe the thing is that you are required to do 50 points at level 1 before you are able to do any level 2 subjects, that's why Hancock said that would be possible to do a level 2 breadth in the second semester.

If you've met the pre-requisites for a level 2 or level 3 subject (perhaps during VCE), why then do you have to do a level 1 subject to get into the said subject?

I'm not sure if we're on the same page.

I believe that most of the good breadths (Commerce for those in Sci) have strict pre-reqs such as Finance 1 and Intro Micro and Macro to proceed to 2nd year studies. You really should do some Lvl 1 breadths because they give a good grounding in a discipline and they have a lower courseload than higher year studies.

EDIT: There's a difference between already completing the pre-reqs in VCE and completely skipping Lvl 1 recommended breadth pre-reqs because you can already move to 2nd year. It does depend on what classes you are looking at doing as well.

So, will I be able to do a level 3 Italian in first year as a breadth given that I've met the pre-reqs in VCELOTE of ≥ 38 and have done a placement test, or will i not? Or should I not?

That won't be counted as level 3 then, it will be counted as level 1 because you took it in your fist year because of the fact that you had done it previously in vce and had done well.

So you would be able to take it. If you still don't get what I mean, search for Italian on the handbook and you will see that Italian 3 and Italian 5 can be taken as level 1 subjects as well as level 2 and 3..

Alright, I understand - sort of. Thanks for making things clearer.

How rough would the course load be? Will it be a level 3 course load or a level 1 course load?

Haha, yeh I know it is pretty confusing but it would be level 3 for someone who start Italian 1 at level 1 and went through all the way to Italian 5 in his/her first semester of third year, but for you it will be a level one because you are starting straight from Italian 5 in first year...

Umm I'm not too sure what you mean by that, but I'm pretty sure that italian 5 would e the same across all the three levels, it would have th same contact hrs etc..
I just checked the handbook and all of them have 4.5 contact hrs, so I don't know what type of a workload that is, but the fact is its all the same :)
Hope that helped!

Course load should be similar, but you'll probably be expected to work at a higher standard (in terms of assessments).

You can't until you have completed 50 points of level 1 subjects, so in semester 2, everything will be peachy and you can take Class. Myth.

Yes it does. So you should take it in your second year if it is not offered in the second semester.
