How much is it used? Is it a problem if I haven't done VCE chemistry and should I do up Fundamentals of Chemistry first year?

It isn't a problem, most mech engies don't do Chem at all during uni. However, flirt with chemistry if you enjoy its company, otherwise steer clear.
The Finnish word pilkunnussija, which translates literally to “comma fucker,” is someone who risks his social wellbeing to annoyingly and persistently point out punctuation errors.

Completed VCE in 2010 - Now doing BSc at UoM

I don't think chem is very relevant to mechanical engineering, but it's good to have in case you decide you want to do chemical engineering instead. If you like chemistry you can do it, but it's not necessary so if you're not interested in chem I wouldn't bother.

I'm planning on doing a mechanical engineering major and I think I'll do chem in the first year since I did well in VCE chem, but after that I probably won't continue with it.

EDIT: I'd say physics is the most relevant level 1 science for that major.

Chemistry 1 teaches you about thermodynamics and materials through inorganic chemistry, however this has a chemical focus (obviously) as opposed to a Mech. Eng focus. Mechanical Engineers take Thermodynamics (3rd year) and Materials (2nd and 3rd year) again which is as chemistry-y as it gets I think.

Thanks for the info. I'm not too keen on chemistry so I think I'll steer clear.
