since i couldnt find any people asking about electives, I figure that I mustve missed out some info...

anyway, so can anyone tell me how to select electives? or is it even possible at this point?

furthermore, when I try to create a timetable (with the subjects already selected), it says "no classes available" under the registration status. Is this normal or...?

Thanks in advance guys!

I know I'm not going to university until 2014, but I'm still interested in this.

How many electives are we allowed to choose for first year? Is a Bachelor of Arts degree set up the same way as a Bachelor of Science degree (with the same number of core and elective subjects), or are they completely different? What is the most maths subjects I can do alongside a Bachelor of Arts degree?
2012 ATAR - 86.75
2013 ATAR - 88.50
2014: BSci (Statistics) at RMIT
2015 - 2017: BCom at UoM

Alongside the B.A. you can do maths subjects as breadth, so I guess going by that I think you'd probably be able to do a total of 6 maths subjects (2 in each year of your degree)

I think electives at melb are the 'breadth' subjects - you should be able to select and enrol in them if you've already completed the admin part of accepting your unimelb offer and all that :) I don't think you'd be able to officially create a timetable now though - there are timetable schedules for each subject put up but class registration doesn't open up until 4th Feb. If it says 'no classes available', i'm pretty sure that's an error since class timetable registration hasn't even begun yet :/ Otherwise if the subject is "not offered in 2013" in the handbook, then that might be why you get that error message coming up

"I think electives at melb are the 'breadth' subjects "

Are you sure? because on sample course plans, electives and breadth studies are shown to be different....

As for picking subjects not offered in 2013, I don't think I have either. I'm planning to do psych. and I've selected compulsory subjects like the mind, brain and behaviour but even those say "no classes available". Perhaps I should just wait a few days? I dunno.

Ohh okay! I always thought breadths and electives were the same thing :S I think you should just wait a few days - just plan your timetable now using the timetable schedules in the subject handbook entries and when timetabling actually opens up on Feb 4th you should be able to register for everything - there's no way that there'd be "no classes available" for mind brain and behaviour haha students from literally every course take that subject!

To my understanding... Electives are the non compulsory subjects that are not breadth. For instance, in commerce, core (compulsory) subjects would be microeconomics which everyone does. But Finance 1 is an elective which some students could choose to do, as it is not compulsory in completion of degree. However, doing physics 1 in commerce is a breadth. I'd assume similar format applies for science and arts.

In your study plan, make sure you are searching for level 1 subjects within the level 1 areas. And that you are not searching for compulsory subjects under elective sections and vice versa. You probably also cannot choose too many electives. Make sure your subject is offered in semester 1 and that you confirm and enrol in the subject after selection. On no. of electives allowed, i'm not sure, best ot check it up with staff.

And timetable as mentioned before doesn't open till later. But it does say 'no classes available' as it does with mine now and last year. Doubt it's an error, and timetable slots should open up in a few days. Don't worry so much. :)
Enjoy the lagfest that is timetabling on the fourth  ^^ .

Alright, so I think I get it now. So basically, when searching for subjects in the handbook, the electives are subjects who have N written under "offered as breadths".

Okay cool. Thanks for all the help guys! :)

If you want more maths or science, and if you do really well in first year, you CAN overload in second and third year and take two extra subjects per year, but otherwise it's min. 4 max. 6 breadths (diplomas excluded).

Ohhhh! Electives are probably what come as "Arts Discipline Subjects" in the study plan for B.A. kids haha that makes a bit more sense :)
