What Chemistry textbook do you recommend for Year 10 in Melbourne?

I contacted the school and Science teacher said that they do have a recommended test book. A booklet and notes will be available during the classroom.

Science Quest 4 is really good. And also purchase the Insight Science definitions explained. Its really good :)

It really depends on what your school is choosing to teach in their particular chemistry class though. A textbook might not work if it covers different material etc. it'd just end up being an unnecessary purchase.

Thanks for your replys. I will look into Science Quest 4 and Insight Science.

Is it specifically for year 10?

Checking the school website, there is a refrence to Analysis of Unknown Compounds and Organic Chemistry.  And they do not have a textbook.

Do you think that Science Quest 4 will cover these 2 themes?

Have you heard of 'Science for Secondary Students 9A - Chemistry' by Marett, F ? It is recommended by the  home schooling site.

I find frustrating that no textbook is prescribed for a subject. Usually, the teacher's notes are scripted and meaningless anyway.

What is your experience with year 10 Chemistry?

In year 10 Chemistry, we looked at the Periodic Table, Ions, Ionic Compounds, trends, electron shells, etc. I therefore don't think that it would be such a good textbook if you're looking at organic chem + unknown compound analysis.

Thanks Yacoubb. I agree that Quest 4 is not suitable from what I managed to gather from the net.  Quest 4 seems to be about natural science in general.

War text book did you use for year 10 for your enlisted chemistry topics ?

I used Science Dimensions 4 back in the day. I think MHS has since changed the science text though, no idea what we use now. :/

During year 11, I realised how helpful Heinemann Chemistry 1 would have been in year 10. I know it's a yr 11 textbook, but it has sections for analysis of unknown compounds  and organic chemistry, as well as periodic trends which is one of the things my school did in yr 10. Plus, you would be able to reuse it for year 11 chem when you get there :)
