I haven't finished reading the book yet, although I can see a common theme occurring throughout the short stories. Okay so breaking down the prompt, think about the first few stories. In the first story 'Fat' the businessman seems to be lost in, he keeps referring to this group but really is anyone else with him? It doesn't seem like it at all.
Then in the story 'Neighbors' Bill seemed quite lost, trying on all of those suits and generally he seemed liked he was trying to find something, but what? During his time in the apartment he seems to be generally lost.
I think a really good story for that prompt although is the story 'They're Not Your Husband'. Earl seems like such a disconnected man after he hears the comments about his wife, he doesn't know how to react. Although he thinks differently about his wife afterwards. Doreen on the other hand has a strong understanding on how to get through life, she doesn't really mind about what other people say about her. If Earl was the same he wouldn't have cared about what those men had said about Doreen and he wouldn't have forced her to loose so much weight.
If you are finding the book difficult to interrupt, look at how Carver varies sentence length and  all of those commas. One more thing, have you been able to identify a metaphor throughout his stories?
I hope this helped.  :)

I will just add a bit more to what I said before.
The prompt says 'Discuss' so I would recommend looking at both sides of the story. Look at how at times men seem to be lost and women having a understanding of how to get through life. Then couple that with the idea of how in the stories women seem to be lost and men knowing how to get through life. Hopefully that helped a little bit more.  :)
