Biomed Chem Prac

Hey guys. A friend of mine got 41% for their percentage yield for their paracetamol prac and is worried because half the people in the group got higher( i got 65% myself) and the other half got similar in the 40-50% range. SHould he worry? If so, how many marks can they take off? thanks

There's generally like, an absolute maximum of two marks assigned to yield in first year synthesis pracs, and you pretty much get one of those just for having produced *something*. How harshly you get marked within that two mark buffer depends on the demonstrator, but either way - stress less

Also just as an aside, higher yield does not necessarily mean better; the higher apparent yield could quite easily just be because of impurities present in your final product...

One time my partner dropped all my yield on the floor and we only got one mark taken off.  For turning in like 0.001 grams.  We scraped like three grains off the floor.

I got like 5% yield and still managed 2/4 for the yield component He/she has nothing to worry about.

i've got the paracetamol prac tomorrow, i wanted to know about the report which must be submitted. is it to be done before the prac? and how long should it be?

I'm not sure if it has changed, but last year we did it during the practical itself, as in write it up from scratch as we go along.

How long? Not too long, just short statements that address the question or task. As long as you have the key points and follow the rules you should be fine. Just make sure you do the CHEMCAL before it and record the ticket number lol.

In general, you should be familiar with what to do. The demonstrators are awesome, the book is a useful resource.

do we really need a duplicate carbon copy book for the prac reports or will a few loose leafs do? are the people to whom we submit the report particular that it be on duplicate carbon paper?

Ask the demonstrator on the first day, if they allow it that's great, if not then you can use loose-leaf for the first one then get the book.

I don't see why they wouldn't allow you to do it, because after writing it up you'd normally just rip out the appropriate sections and staple them together for hand up anyway.

i saw many people using loose leaf and ive done 2 pracs so far (1 in week 2 and one today) so im sure its fine.
