Applying for a DES (Derived Examination Score)?

Hey everyone,

Just wondering if anyone on VN has applied for a DES this year or in previous years? I got diagnosed with glandular fever about 1 month ago so I applied for it for two of my mid-year exams.

I was wondering what there predictions are like and how they get to the derived score? I have heard that it's partly from my GAT score, but this seems like a disadvantage considering I was sick during the time I took the GAT.

Do they look at my overall performance in VCE (i.e subjects taken in 2008, past SAC marks)?

I believe they look at heaps of things, such as SACs, GAT, Trial Exams, End of year exams etc. I don't think they look at marks for other subjects though.

From what I've heard, they take your SACs, your GAT and the predicted study score the teachers give you.

It is calculated from a combination of your SAC marks (unit 3 and 4), indicative grade (provided your teacher's indicative grades correlated with the spread of your cohorts marks), GAT (if suitable, in your case probably not) and, in the case of subjects with two exams, i'm pretty sure they also look at your exam 2 mark.

Thus, the mark you receive in August will not be the DES but you will get it in the end of year results

EDIT: you will find out by August if your application has been accepted

If a family member died in the middle of the year and your still experiencing trauma at end of year exams can you apply for a DES?

no, that would be a case for a SEAS application though (special consideration section)

Yep, I have been advised to do this by the school counsellors. I'm hoping that it wont be a long term thing- but if it is the case (which, it probably will), I will definatly be applying.
