Studying Language at UoM

Hi guys!

I'm only in Year 11, but my plan is to study Science at UoM (idk about Biomed..) I'm  enrolled in French 1/2 at school... but despite really wanting to learn the language, I'm not that good... and I think it would be best if I dropped it and pick up GMA (Spesh 1/2)

So I'm wondering with Science or Biomed at UoM, I've heard you can learn the learn language (I'm assuming French is taught)  whilst completing your undergraduate degree,

I heard you can do this as a breath subject.

But I also have been told you can do it through Diploma of Language (Can you complete this diploma at the same time as the undergrad degree?) Because It would be cool to actually have a language qualification..

With breadth/ dip lang does it require you to have prior knowledge of the Language, and if so to what extent?

Sorry all this uni stuff is so confusing.

I'm keen on learning this language, but definitely not strong at it, and I think it's best to drop it at VCE now to ensure I can the highest ATAR I can possibly get. However I still keen on the language and definitely want to pick it up after I finish year 12.

If anyone has done Language at Uni... please share your experiences.... I would love to know!

Hi :)
You don't need any prior knowledge to study French at UoM as they have a beginners' entry level (French 1). You'd have to go over things you already know, but it would give you a chance to brush up on things.
You can do the diploma at the same time as your degree and you'll be at uni 6-12 month longer due to the extra subjects you will be taking.
I can't really comment on whether GMA or French would be better for you personally, but don't forget that French gets scaled up ~11 points, so you will still have a chance of doing well and there are always places you can go to get help. However, if it's really stressing you out it may be best to drop it and pick up something you're more comfortable with.

thanks!

well i made a thread before concerning subject Re: Subject Selection Dilemma

spesh scales as well and I think i would do better in spesh than in french... I'm also acceralating and doing methods this year.

If you have opinions/ tips of your own please feel free as I'm still quite indecisive but, I think doing spesh would be better for my ATAR...  even though i enjoy learning the french, probably have to put it on hold...

Umm regarding language diploma.. im just wondering does it contribute/ affect the GPA of your undergrad degree?

I don't really know much about spesh but doing methods 3/4 this year would surely help with it.

I'm pretty sure the diploma does contribute to the GPA. GPA calculations can vary though depending on which postgrad course/uni you apply to.

For the record, learning a language in Uni can result if different experiences.
I have friends who absolutely love it and some who fall behind because languages are taught at a quicker pace
compared to the VCE equivalents.

I am currently doing BSci at Unimelb with Japanese as breadth. According to the Arts Dept, to get a concurrent diploma, one has to do 100 credit points (12.5 each) of your chosen language. and yes, claireb is right that it will add a term or two worth to your bachelor's. Also, if you have been doing French at VCE, you can get accredited for it as there will be a Placement Test every start of semester to determine your level of competency in a specific language. They will then tell you whether to do beginners or not :)
