Just wondering, what are some of the precautions you have to take into consideration in a circuit to prevent a certain amount of current to flow through a LED ?

I dont know if that makes sense but like if you have for example a 100ohm resistor in series with a potentiometer and the potentiometer is in parallel with a LED, and the maximum current that can flow through the LED is 25mA, how do you prevent exceeding the 25mA current?

Do you make sure the resistor is less than 100ohm or bigger? Etc
