Aristotle essay question

(1/1)

lovatic:
Is Aristotle right that the good person will be happy – no matter what tragedy befalls them or those who they care about? {Imagine a parent whose child is killed.... if the parent was unhappy would this indicate that something was wrong with him/her or that she/ he was not a good person?}

Aurelian:
Aristotle doesn't say this. In fact, he specifically says that eudaimonia ("flourishing" or "happiness") is destroyed by such tragedy. Refer especially to 1099b (on the importance of good fortune in general) and 1100a (the more specific discussion about Priam) in Book I (of the Nicomachean Ethics).
