My class only started on Weil (had our second class on it yesterday/Monday). I think her ideas are more straightforward in terms of what she considers a good life (I mean she immediately addresses the need for physical needs and what exact things we need to feed our soul or whatever) but I found it dreadful reading through all those needs... Furthermore a lot of her writing was just eloquence and her whole idea that obligations are in a metaphysical realm was kinda iffy to me. (perhaps she is indeed crazy)
Anyway the pattern I noticed is that upon first reading I am often confused, but by the time my teacher explains them all it all makes perfect sense, so when I read it again, light bulbs and everything hahaha
And yep, we've done the same here at Nossal hole. Just after we finish this we are spending some time on focusing outcome 3 (I think) or whatever that is dedicated to a particular criteria whereby we have to draw wider resources into the topic, and then we'll start on unit 4.
Just before I start to reply to this, I just googled Nossal and your scores last year (l thought it looked like you might be dux this year). But what I saw was YSB and laughed so hard OMG that's absolutely hilarious!!
Anyway yeah I agree that the good life according to Weil is straightforward, fulfil the 14 needs or "fall into a state more or less resembling death". As one cannot live a good life without their fulfilment, at least that's what our class gathered.
Just to check, have you Nossal guys analysed the Freedom of Opinion section? Because that, and the need for Truth are so incredulously ridiculous I think, when you read the line "Nothing in all of this would involve the slightest attack on public liberty". That's when we gave up, too much contradictions! She MUST be crazy!!
I agree that when it's stepped through with a teacher it becomes much more clear than just with personal reading. I know I gave up on my first attempt XD
We have our OC2 SAC on Wednesday, then on to OC3 by the end of the month. Yep, two weeks between the two outcomes. It's going to be hectic.. The wider resources is OC3, OC2 is the comparative essay (Nietzsche v Weil for us).
Weil let's see how things go! (awful pun and it's not even pronounced right haha) Maybe Nossal will finally get their first philosophy study score above 40! Gippsland Grammar is running the course for the first time so we have no idea how we're going to go at the end of the year
