Gibson's theory of perceptual development

Does any one have a good definition for affordance and a good example?

Affordances are perceived and actual properties of something in the environment that suggests how it should be used (it exists within the object, not created by observer). It can vary from one to another as we are designed to detect properties that are relevant to us (through past experience, development levels etc). Example : Visual Cliff Experiment ( Infants perceive a surface of support and avoid going off the cliff) and a door affords a way for us to go through.
