Hey I've got the aspirin SAC next week and it might be a dumb question but we're using proton NMR and IR spec to test sample, but I'm confused to why we do this? what do each of these find out about the aspirin? thanks in advance :)

hey dude haha

Aspirin is basically acetylsalicylic acid, which is synthesised by reacting Salicylic Acid and Ethanoic Anhydride.

In this case, you'd probably be smashing up a tablet of aspirin, making a solution and analysing it.

Proton NMR is used to analyse the number of different hydrogen environments in a molecule, and will help you deduce it's molecular structure. Infra-Red NMR is used to analyse functional groups present such as the C=O and the OH groups, which you will find are all present in an aspirin molecule :).
