Who here believes in horoscopes or has one or more parents who religiously believe in them (like me), to the point that they base your life decisions on your horoscope (for instance in horoscope matching etc.)?

How do you convince someone that personal horoscopes (not the one that comes in the paper) are BS?

Tell her that they're just really general statements and that's why it might seem that they're "right" (if she believes that anyway). I suppose you could ask her to pretend she's another star sign for a while and see how the horoscopes apply to her, but then she'd have to be willing to do so.

Many of the statements (from mine anyway) - I had mine translated to English - were plain wrong. A couple were right, and the rest of them were so general they could have applied to anyone.

This is just one example.

I think horoscopes make too many general statements (from the ones that I've read in the paper) and if you go through all of the horoscopes its likely to find that most can be applicable or not related to you anyway

Not to mention how horoscope readings can clash with your chinese zodiac animal @_@

anyway, reasons why they are bs

- When you were born your obstetrician had more gravitational effect on you than any planet or star in the universe.
- There is not "true" horoscope reading since there's so many publications to the point where there is 0 consistency between each reading so how can you believe in it
- There are over 6 billion people on this planet. Population increases by 3 people per second. Do you think that all of the people born in a given month, week or a minute have the same destiny?
- Horoscopes were built on the theory that the sun and other planets rotated around the earth which is now untrue so that might throw horoscope theory out of the window

ahaha i'm not sure if my sister still does, but she used to base her entire life on horoscopes. i shit you not, whenever she went on a date, she'd ask the guy his birthday, work out their compatibility, and then decided whether or not to see him again based on that. nothing i tried saying would've convinced her that horrorscopes(im so hilarious) weren't true either. :'D

Horoscopes aren't cold reading, you're thinking of fortune telling. Horoscopes are just truisms and random predictions

Disagree, the two are much of a muchness. Both use Barnam statements to elicit a pseudo-personal response from the subject.

How do you convince someone that personal horoscopes (not the one that comes in the paper) are BS?

My father has read a book or two over the years but more out of interest as to what the book predicts than an actual belief in it.

I'm sort of the same, I read horoscopes moreso for my own entertainment than anything else and take it with a grain of salt, however if a horoscope gives me a positive prediction, I certainly would be happy to accept it. I've thought of going to get one of those tarot card readings out of curiosity before.

Cut out a horoscope that isn't their sign, give it to them and ask how well it applies.

Just like this:

Damn, someone beat me to it. Great show though.
