Finance major

Hi,

I'm thinking of doing a Accounting/Finance double major (b.com UoM).

What are some careers I can do with a Finance major besides IB and consulting?

I'm also thinking of doing a finance honours. How will this change things in terms of career prospects?

Thanks

Finance is hardly a prerequisite in getting into IB and/or MC. In fact youd be hard pressed to get into several departments of an IB (ie. trading, risk analysis, forecaster) with "just" a finance major. The major simply does not give you enough training in the quantitative side to keep you on equal footing with other applicants who study engineering, mathematics, statistics/econometrics etc. (along with a commerce degree/finance major).

However, finance is an extremely useful compliment to accounting as so many large companies use rather complex derivatives and hedging products. Understanding the basics of these financial instruments will be useful when you have to analyse these items on their financial statements.
