Link sentance in an essay

My year 11 teacher said that a link sentance should link to the next paragraph.My year 12 teacher said the link sentance should link to the contention.Which one is "correct".

Both. In an essay, a linking sentence is used at the end of a paragraph. It completes the paragraph as well as introducing the next paragraph. Your year 11 teacher is correct in saying that it should link to your next paragraph. Your year 12 teacher is correct in saying that should link to the contention of the paragraph. Btw, it's 'sentence' not 'sentance.'

The link to the next paragraph should be one of *logic* - not an explicit, express link. Those sound amateurish, and don't finish off the paragraph with a sense of completion.

The link to your contention is the more explicit one.

Ideally, each of your topic sentences (and therefore summary sentences) should, when read one after the other, add up to your overall contention.
