Rooms at college

Hi everyone.
Currently in year 12 and trying to decide how to order my college application for the University of Melbourne.
Can anyone confirm whether all rooms at the colleges are single beds (first year student) as I wish to have a room to myself if this is possible. Especially at Queens, Trinity and Ormond as they are my current top three.

The college I'm living at has rooms with single beds and very securely locked doors, plus adequate storage space, Internet access point and etc. so living privately wouldn't be a problem if that's the way you wanted it. That said, Medley is the smallest of the uni colleges and nobody seems to know it exists, and I can't speak for the others. I assume all or the majority of the other colleges have private rooms?

Not sure, but they should be a studio type room (single bed, one room) as I have yet to hear about anything different.

Off to a good start then. I just ask as when I stayed at Trinity for a school excursion we were in rooms of two.

I used to live at international house, where all rooms are single. However there are various degrees of rooms. Everything from really shit, single bed rooms, extremely hot in the summer, walls made of plastic to new one bedroom apartments with kitchen, living, tv own toilet, and of course bedroom with queen+ bed. Room assignment is given on the basis of contribution to international house (e.g. planning stuff, participating in events etc.).

All first years get a similar room though, quite low quality as I described - as you haven't contributed yet.

Honestly for what you are recommending I would recommend getting your own apartment, its so much better for living more privately, you will always get to hang out with your friends at uni or elsewhere you don't need them breathing down your neck 24 hours a day. anyway this my opinion.

I've seen a few of the colleges, and their rooms. Ormond, Medley and Whitley. Ormond by far had the worst amenities in terms of their lodging. I can't speak for all rooms there, but I stayed a night in 2010. The rooms were small, the desk in there was small and rubbish, and the furniture was rubbish. Of Medley and Whitley. They're about the same size, with the Whitley rooms probably being a little bigger and a little bigger appointed. Medley (as I'm sure LeviLamp can either confirm or tell me I'm wrong) recently had an expansion to their residential facilities, so is probably the most modern in those regards.
People from Trinity have also told me the rooms are hellishly small there as well. I guess it depends on what you're looking for though. You really don't need all that space with the Uni so close, and such fantastic college facilities. Ormond and Trinity certainly have the prestige...they're gorgeous! So is Medley though I might say.

Extra benefit of Medley: you don't need good grades to avoid being kicked out and the first-whatever years mostly have the same quality rooms (third floor is slightly larger but there are first-years on it too) with the exception of the side building on the end that houses four people and the two in Benvenuta.

Other bonuses include: when I went there, walking down the stairs which are a perfect example of period architecture, whilst someone on the bottom floor practised (very, very well) her opera singing. Painted the perfect picture haha!

omg yes that's Ash, she's a duty tutor/also doing a Masters in Music Education (can you tell she has a postgrad qualification in opera?) and she is the loveliest person + whenever she sings you can hear it all through the college and it's great

Haha that makes total sense now! It was pretty cool. I was just thinking to myself "this is just amazingly and beautifully pretentious...I love it!". We just don't have opera in the country
