English or Literature?

Hi everyone,

I've entered my subjects for 2014 (Year 12). I'm sure of the following:
- Methods (CAS)
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Specialist.

I'm looking to do either a B.BMed or B.Sc at Melbourne University, which due to my rural location require a 95 or 78 ENTER score.
I am confident if i try my hardest i can get close to 95. I have always been a strong Math/Science student and slightly above average in english.

I'm currently undertaking Literature Unit 1 & 2, i've applied to do Unit 3 & 4 but i am having second thoughts. Literature is the one class i don't look forward to, i don't necessarily dislike it but i find it hard to apply myself compared to my other subjects. I have several concerns with doing Literature opposed to English:
- High workload
- Not suiting my personality (not an exceedingly creative and out there thinker, I am however structured and straightforward)

But i also have some concerns with doing English:
- Crappy classmates compared to Literature
- Lower quality teachers

I'd appreciate any advice whatsoever as i'd really like to make a decision by the end of the week and are looking for an advice possible.

Thanks :)
2014: English (38~37) Specialist (33~45) Methods (48~50) Chemistry (46~48) Biology (44~44)
ATAR: 97.6

Monash MBBS (Honours) Class of '19'

PM For tutoring in Melbourne Area ($30/hour) :)

Don't have misgivings about doing English instead of Literature, at least not for those reasons. It seems like that English is your preferred option, so if that's what you want then go for it. How capable your classmates or teachers are shouldn't actually factor into your decision because it has nothing to do with your own capabilities. :)

What would be your reasons for keeping Literature?

I heard Lit is very competitive. You may struggle scoring highly unless you're really passionate about it. Think about it, all of the slack and mediocre students are forced to study English so you'll be able to beat so many students in the state plus usually.. hate to say it but nerds study Literature so you're going into competition with them all, no offence intended.

Thanks for all the replies.

The points in favour of Literature are:
- Highly engaged class (my current class is very good and whole group discussions are very good)
- I benefit from competition and see Lit as more competitive than English
- Can be more interesting (however i get sick of the depth sometimes)

I think i'll have a talk to our head of english tomorrow and get his opinion.

I am tending towards English, but would appreciate any other opinions replies :)

Haha, compliment  accepted. ;)
OP, it's really up to you. I'd be interested to find our what you choose regardless. Don't discount lit because of the competitiveness though. How much you enjoy the course itself and what you learn from it should be  the most important thing. Maybe you don't enjoy it so much and that's fine. I'm sure you'd go well in English. I think what I'm saying is that if you want to do lit don't be turned off by the crazy keenbeans. I know that actually intimidated me a lot at first,-being told that only the geniuses do well in lit-, but in the end hard work pays off a lot more than genius.
