Officially failed my English Unit 4, hence no ATAR score

Hello guys,

It's true, i failed my English sac and the re-sit and its official: I will not be receiving an ATAR score and won't be sitting the end of year exams.
I will be doing an "S" only program meaning i have to pass all of my SACs for all my subjects and i will get a VCE certificate...

To my understanding, i am apprently able to do a TAFE course and after i finish that, i can go to university and do like a bachelors degree, and maybe onto a masters? This is all i've heard from friends and some teachers so i have no in-depth knowledge regarding this. Can someone confirm?

Furthermore, after year 12, i was planning to join the Navy, specifically as a Clearance Diver. Can i still do that job, or any other navy job with my current circumstance?

Any feedback is appreciated

Thanks again guys

I thought the technicality was that only 3 units of English were required?

Maybe laseredd or polonius (the VCAA gurus) can shed more light on it.

You need 3 units for a pass, both U3/4 for a study score.

Yup, exactly. Award of the VCE (passing) requires three units from the English group (including at least one of either unit 3 or 4). However, to receive a study score for English (which is required for an ATAR) you need to pass a unit 3/4 sequence.

There are many alternate pathways available into university. Have you tried discussing this with your careers advisor? It would depend on what you want to do, but this is certainly not the end of the road.

just another idea - you could continue doing the rest of your subjects this year and trying hard in them, then next year, study VCE english at an adult education place while you work or take a gap year or something
the navy loves people who take gap years ! and it will show youre determined, + you get an atar :D

just an idea

Took the words right out of my mouth. In my opinion you should just do well in your other subjects then study English at a TAFE while doing something else!

Do VCE again next year, through Distance Ed. Their english teachers are super helpful.. Maybe do 3 Unit 3/4 subjects (including english) and 3 the next year. It would give you more time to concentrate on each subject, including english.

Why would they give you an N after failing one SAC?

I'm rather curious about this too. Approximately 5 of my classmates got failing grades for their Unit 3 language analysis task SAC, yet still 'passed' the unit as they passed their resit for a satisfactory mark.

Your options seem to me:
a)Continue pushing and fighting for a resitt.
If that fails:
b)Refuse to go unscored in your other units and demand you go scored. Tell the school it is your intention to do Unit 3/4 english again next year. Do 3/4 english next year at a TAFE or similar and then get an ATAR using this years scores and your English from next year. You could work an earn money if you were to take this option next year which would be a plus.

or:
C) Get a TAFE certificate (which isn't VCE) and follow that pathway to uni. (B is probably easier though).

I'm rather curious about this too. Approximately 5 of my classmates got failing grades for their Unit 3 language analysis task SAC, yet still 'passed' the unit as they passed their resit for a satisfactory mark.
OP said they failed a resit also. Still seems pretty harsh.

Depends if he actually needs to repeat too, he should still receive his VCE if he passes everything else, he just won't be eligible for an ATAR.

Since he's considering going into the Navy, it's probably worth him investigating that and seeing what he needs to do to get into there (i.e. does he need an ATAR to do that, or just needs to receive his VCE).

There's also all those alternative pathway courses you can do to get into uni that are worth looking in to as well (pretty much every uni website will have a 'pathways' section or something like that). If you go for one of those, might want to toss up the pros or cons of doing that vs. repeating VCE English. More or less just start googling everything you're interested in doing, explore their websites for information, talk to careers advisors, probably calling up the institutions you're interested in and talking to them etc.

I did a bit of searching and you don't need a uni degree nor do you even need to have finished school to start training to become a clearance diver as per this site: http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/navy/jobs/ClearanceDiver/EducationAndExperience/
