Depends on how well you want to do. At my school we essentially skipped matrices and Markov chains. We learned the theory, and how to set up transition matrices, but we skipped how to work with them by hand.

Markov processes/chains in general are extremely important in simulation methods as a whole. Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques are at the forefront of current numerical techniques in simulations and probability theory.

Getting a very (diluted) taste of it in methods is a good thing.

haha, but (elaborating on my orignal "ninja" reply) i guess like most things Markov chains are optional.. just like getting 40+ in methods is optional
