Hi,

I've heard that a student must complete a specific number of VCE unit 1 and 2 subjects in addition to the 4 VCE unit 3 and 4 subject to qualify for an ATAR. Could someone please clarify this and also mention exactly how many unit 1 and 2 subjects are required.
Please provide your source of info (hopefully from VTAC or VCAA ;)). Thanks

At least 16 units of VCE Units (that's counting Units 1/2 and Units 3/4 as VCE units). If you do 4 units 3/4 subjects, then you need to do 4 unit 1/2 subjects (plus make sure you meet that English criteria), which would give you 16 units total. That VTAC additional requirement is that you pass a 3/4 sequence of an English subject (and hence get an ATAR), as opposed to just passing any 3 units of an English subject (which would just give you your VCE).  But yeah that link spells it all out simply.

You need a minimum of 16 units including 3 from English group to pass.
Therefore 4 1/2's and 4 3/4's=VCE

However I think you can do 8 3/4's and still pass, wouldn't recommend that though.

Requirements differ for mature age students.

Source? The only thing I can think that you might be referring to here is that you can take as long as you want to complete the VCE, which is true for everyone. I'm not aware of any VCE rule that's age-specific.

Edit: You're correct. http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/Adults/vce_adult.aspx

Thank for the responses guys.

What is the difference between getting an ATAR and getting VCE? Aren't both a prerequisite for each other?

Thanks

You can pass your VCE without being awarded an ATAR score (ie. through failing a unit of English). Having an ATAR score means you passed VCE though.
