What are the differences between the controlled variables, independent variables and dependant variable?

I though the controlled variables was the independent variable???

controlled- what you keep constant
independent - what you change
dependent - the variable affected by what you change

so let's say pendulum experiment, you wanna test length vs period

so controlled - mass
    independent - length
    dependent - period
