So this subject only has a perquisite of math. I am a science student and wondering would some knowledge in a particular subject help and is it possible to get an H1 in this subject without having done any commerce in the past?

I am quite sure it requires more than maths as a pre-requisite. You need 'An approved quantitative subject and an approved accounting subject.' or Finance I.

It is a very easy subject that only requires a very basic knowledge of high school algebra. All the finance stuff will be taught in class or easily sourced from textbook.

The subjects taught are very easy and everyone I knew went into the exam with a 90 -100 average. (Exam was a different story - as they had to make it tricky to standardise the crap out of the marking distributions).

The hardest maths you will require is plugging into the formula - that is, high school maths as sluu001 explained.

In general, finance at UoM is easy both the mathematics involved if you are a science student or a mathematically inclined students and the theory in terms of the lectures.  But yes, they need a nice bell curve so they will always be tricky questions to trick the crap out of you.

If you want a h1 - then yes (the exam borrows heavily from the book to draft the trickier questions).
For anything below that, then the book isnt necessary.
