Using quotes in a creative context piece

Hello hello,
My tutor encourages me to use direct quotes from the novel we're doing in my creative pieces. But I did this in one of my SACs and my teacher marked me down and said to avoid it. These are quotes from the novel by the way, not external ones.

From the perspective of a student who is currently in year 12:

I'm doing Whose Reality this year for my context, and have opted to write in an expository fashion. Whenever I quote directly from the text I am planning to use, I instantly feel as though I'm writing a text response essay -- this is not the point of context. As a result, I resorted to using my text as a springboard, in which I use the main themes, such as the protagonist's memory and imagination, as supportive examples for the bigger picture I am trying to draw.

That's a good thing to do. shows that you are well-read. 

also, does not necessarily have to reflect author's ideals. you can totally disagree with the viewpoint of the author in your chosen text, but don't forget to justify why & link it back to the topic.

I wasn't trying to refer to the movie in any particular way (since I didn't actually like it much), but I was definitely inspired by the girl's ambition that was printed in the year book. So yeah, that's where I got it from
