For definitions would it be recommended to

1. write the one sentence definition
2. provide an example

in order to secure a 2 mark answer?

Yes, for a 2 mark question, write the definition and then an example.

HOWEVER, if there is a Case Study and the Question involves a Definition worth 2 Marks - Then you must definite the term, and then relate your definition to the Case Study Information provided.

I've done 8 Practice Exams for Business Management, and I haven't seen an Exam that asks for a Definition and has no Case Study Information provided before it. I don't think any of the VCAA exams do either. Usually, definition questions are used as a lead-in to get your brain thinking, and then the next question after that will be worth 3 or 4 Marks (or anything higher as well) which MAY or MAY NOT require you to refer to your Definition in an explanation for the Question.

95% of the time, there will be a Case Study, so you are expected to always relate back to it whenever you can, including for straight Definition Questions worth 2 Marks.

Hope this helps!

Our teacher deducts marks if we don't give an example. I'm pretty sure you don't even need an example, but it'd be safe to do so.

The safest bet is to supply a definition that is around 2 lines, and then supplement your answer with an example. As Damoz has said, if the question is accompanied by a case study, provide an example from the case study as the definition would have something to do with it.
