Is my school allowed to do this?

Today we got given our allocated subjects for 2014. One of my friends applied to do 1/2 literature this year but it clashed with drama so she couldn't take it. So she applied to do 3/4 lit next year and the school today told her that they aren't allowing her to take it because she will miss one period a fortnight because of her VET hospitality course.

My friends and I have tried telling her to fight it because we know and she knows that she is prepared to do anything to catch up on missed out classes if that's what the school is concerned about. I don't really understand their logic though-she is STILL going to miss a class a fortnight no matter what subject she chooses! And it's not like her core English marks aren't high enough, she's consistently been getting 85% + all year and the school says the cut off is an average of 80% for English marks to take literature.

So is my school allowed to dictate my friends subject selection just because she does a VET? Who would it be best reported to do you think? Many thanks  :)

Get a parent to talk to someone about it. When parents get involved, everything is so much easier.

What about the attendance though? One class per fortnight, two classes per month, ~20 classes in a year..that's more than 5% I believe
2012 ATAR:88.90

2013-2015 Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and Science (dropped in 2015)
2015-2017 Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical)

Yes I know BigAl, but the reality is that she's going to miss one class a fortnight regardless of what subject she does take. And the VET course is through school, so missing a class because of VET doesn't count as using up the 5% no attendance rate at my school.
