Last question, also got gradient = -root(k-4)!! But then I tried to solve dy/dx =0, and only got one answer when I needed to find both minimum and maximum, so made up k values to get method mark for subbing it back into a(k) to find area... And x'p' question weird notation.. Otherwise not too bad, multiple choice was at times tricky but doable and the other extended responses weren't too bad, I reckon A  cuttof similar to last years

Did anyone else feel like that exam was very calculus focused? (I mean more so than usual) Every question had a couple, find this length then find the maximum/minimum. The train supports, the garden, the OQ thing in Q4, the k thing in Q4. In addition, there was no normal probability except for MC Q22 o.O Also, I thought VCAA was a bitch with changing how many decimal places they wanted this year: every fucking question!

Yeah so much calculus! Like no norm distribution and hardly any graphing

The last 8 marks were ridiculous. Left completely blank. Should have been a show question for the gradient of the tankent on terms of k so you could do the questions afterwards

What % of the state does everyone think will get the last few qns right?

I agreee, I didn't do the four last questions, losing 8 marks. I had no idea how to get the gradient in terms of k. All the ways I was thinking of didn't seem to apply.

yeah, even after looking up thushan's and alwin's answers I didn't get it. The question was ridiculous and should have been "show that" for sure. But hey, it might mean lower cutoff!

Yeah, and I think they needed to give us more information, it wasn't easy to pick out from.

Overall I don't think that would really matter though seeing as there are plenty of kids in the same position as you.
It just truly separated the top students from the bottom students.

Unlike spesh today, it was all about whether you made mistakes or not and well... Im looking at a raw score of 33 right now lol

So what was the specialist exam like?

Did anyone manage to get the length of EF thing in the Tasmania jones one?
How were you supposed to fine the coordinates of E :\

EF represented the maximum vertical length between the two graphs, which was a maximum of top graph - bottom graph ie L=y-f(x) where y was the equation of the line segment AB and f(x) was the cubic function for the mountains/valley, find dL/dx and let it equal zero to solve for the value of x that makes L a maximum, that's the x-co-ordinate of E and F. Sub that value back into the function L to get the actual length.

omg that actually makes sense.

I found the gradient.

Almost. I chose the wrong root. (I did positive instead of negative)
So I couldn't obtain feasible answers (within given domain etc.) for the following parts and ended up leaving them blank...
So close yet so far...

Shattered as.  :'(

Same thing as you except i entered the equations wrong into my calc. Lol...

Yeah, imo, it was probably the hardest vcaa Methods exam set in past ten years or so. Having said that, while the mean would be lower than in previous years, I still thought that the exam was doable and that those who want to achieve top scores would still have to have done well in both exams.
