Hey, just wondering, why are you aspiring to obtain two law degrees when you can practice law with just an LLB (from Monash)?

cuz holmes, the JD at melb teaches more thorough course material than the LLB at Monash comparatively.

But then again, monash is shorter in terms of course periods and time involved... so.... depends

But why get two law degrees? If you want to do JD then wouldn't you want to do maybe like a commerce undergraduate degree then do JD? Then you would have comm degree + JD instead of LLB + JD which basically are the same...

I suppose, hypothetically, if you became a law consultant, you'd want to have two highly-specialized Law degrees rather than one Law degree and some general Commerce degree, just to appear as a more 'qualified' lawyer.

Further, doing LLB before JD would mean you'd have a solid foundation by the time you start JD, meaning less study for higher grades.

It looks like on http://www.law.unimelb.edu.au/jd/current-students/jd-course-rules-and-policies/jd-course-rules#1.0 that you can't do the JD after another law degree

Even if you get the LLB as part of a double degree? (I'm not sure if you can do that though)

LLB and JD are practically the same degree if you want to practise law in Australia like MBBS and MD. Just the latters are post graduate degrees.

So, you're saying someone would do MBBS and then do MD for further study? I wouldn't think so. Same with LLB and JD.

You would either choose LLB or JD.

Yeah and if you really wanted to do more study/get into academia you would do a LLM/PhD/LLD (or whatever higher research degrees there are)

LLB is undergraduate though, isn't it? Isn't it a bit like going from a VCE Unit 1/2 (LLB) to a 3/4 (JD) then?

That's not how it works, one isn't more advanced than the other, they are the same qualifications in Australia. It's just that UoM follows a different model where they only offer post-graduate law (American style) and you have to do the LSAT to get in (very competitive). You can also do a JD in Monash (doesnt require LSAT), but i think only the UoM JD is recognised in America.

Yeah, I've always found that odd; why is UoM considered "better" than other unis when they make you waste years on an undergraduate in order for you to do the postgraduate you desire?

Yes LLB is an undergraduate degree however in Australia, to practise law, you only need an LLB degree. Having a JD would not give you much of an advantage in terms of job opportunities in the law field, if not, no advantage whatsoever.

So there is pretty much no advantage in doing a 6 year course for JD at UoM instead of a 4 year course at Monash? Sweet.

Nope :)
Monash is just as good as Melbourne. The only difference is that Melbourne Uni is much more older hence only
slightly more experienced. Either way, you're going to end up with a great degree from a very reputable university and have a great prospect for employability.

True that.

But then again, if you're not sure of what you want as your end occupation, you could opt for a general degree at UoM first then make another choice after 3 years, for those somewhat clueless at the end of Year 12.
