It's been a while since I read that book... but I remember *some* stuff that could get you started...
Umm... the old lady is the head of the house/farm when traditionally that's a male's job.
Lyle's wife (name?) is the bread-winner for their family - Lyle feels that he is redundant and has failed his role as father/husband, his wife isn't particularly supportive or consoles him (from memory). Actually, I recall her complaining that she has to be the one to go out and work. She also goes on to be a politician - leadership and politics have been traditionally male-dominated.
Lyle story is like a reincarnation of the twins' father and how he suicided b/c of that apparent belief that he had failed in his role (I think... check the flashback scenes...)
Julia (?) and Felix at the start with the broken down car.
I know the Felix is gay, but traditionally as a male he should know something about cars.
Julia sort of takes control and stuff and shows better knowledge, while the son fills the 'female' role of standing around quite uselessly and complaining.
I'm sorry, I can't remember all the characters' names... XD
Hopefully I've given you a few ideas to build from tho ^_^
