motivation theories to increase competitiveness?

how exactly do motivational theories allow an organisation to be more competitive?
would it involve, for example, Herzberg's two factor theory's application of recognition and higher levels of responsibility to employees to then increase satisfaction.. and in turn promoting a higher standard of work?
not really sure, can anyone help with this?

Well all 3 motivational theories help improve job satisfaction and motivation, which would in turn improve productivity. In theory this should lead to better use of inputs (eg. time, money, labour) to produce outputs (goods and services), improving competitiveness.
Also, improvements in job satisfaction and motivation would lower employee absenteeism and staff turnover, reducing costs associated with attracting and training new staff. Lowered costs and retaining skilled workers would improve competitiveness.
If the question asked specifically about Herzberg you would have to talk about increasing motivation factors (eg. stimulating work, responsibility, recognition etc.) and minimizing hygiene factors (supervision, unsuitable working conditions, pay etc.)

All three theories have the fundamental underpinning of providing employees with essential intrinsic benefits. Although, Maslow's 'lower level' or 'basic needs' are extrinsic.  Maslow stated that the achievement of self-actualisation is the achievement of an individual employee's goals and their ability to reach their full potential. Herzberg.....well Herzberg just gave this a more vigorous classification. Locke also stated by providing employees with these challenging goals it provided motivation to fulfill the goal, and this, therefore, improved performance.

Okay so essentially if an organisation addresses these self-actualisation needs then employees are likely to be highly motivated and morale is likely to be high. This enhanced motivation is likely to lead to increased job performance which will lead to increased productivity. This increase will increase the organisation's competitiveness.
