[resolved] Bound reference - is stapled pages acceptable?

Hi,

I'm starting homework for further maths next year and am researching about bound references.

I would like to make mine on the computer as my handwriting sucks. I'm a messy kind of person. Constructive chaos, that's what I call it.

Anyway, would say fifty pages bound together by staples be accepted into the end of year examination? I'd put on probably at least four staples and then cover them up with masking tape.

This would allow me to have neat theory but also worked examples, and I could staple together different coloured pages for each module. I've read the "contructing a bound reference" thread but I can't see myself being neat enough to make that method as useful as this.

Cheers,
Stewart

edit: I found the official rules, that state a "a permanently bound student-constructed set of notes without foldouts " is acceptable. Does my staples & tape count as permanently bound?

I would say yes that would be acceptable as long as nothing falls out and it is perfectly intact. I mean basic bound references are just cardboard covers stapled to pieces of paper to make a book. Though just in case, you might want to make a harder piece of paper or cardboard as your front (and back if you want) cover, just in case you flick through the pages to fast and end up ripping the paper out.

Answering your question, that would be fine. Though if all else fails, you could just glue your printed out pages to a normal book. :) :P

Hello Sheo,

Thanks for your response  :)

I did think it would probably be ok but god knows I don't want to spend a whole year working on a book only to have it taken away. But if they didn't accept that, I'd walk out anyway on the grounds that they are nit-picky jerks. I mean, no tabs? Wtf. What am I gonna do with tabs? Cheat? Look up things faster in my book? God forbid!

And a clear drink botlle! Seriously! Have I got stuff written in there, illuminated by a secret light? No, I don't. Do you know why? Because someone staring into their drink bottle for half the exam looks suspicious.

Bloody idiots.

Anyway, thanks  :D

Just to add to this.

I had a bunch of loose leaf paper, stapled it and then put tape over the staples.

It was perfectly fine.

You shouldn't have issues.. Unless 50 pages is too thick for a stapler.. Eh..

Also, you can go to office works and they do really good binding/printing etc. for a reasonable price.

Just wondering, lets say I have 2 spiral notebook filled with notes. Am I allowed to tie them together? you know, as in using something like a shoelace to tie together the two books? I did this for my yr 11 exam, but I'm not sure if it's allowed for Year 12 when things are much more strict.

Well the rules say that the bound reference must have a "single horizontal or vertical spine". So I don't think that simply tying the two spiral notebook together will be allowed because you will have two spines  :-\. You might want to try ripping out the pages from the book and like Chasej suggested, take them to Officeworks to get it bound. Or you could just get a book with a bunch a lot of papers.

If you brought one in with a label you could do anything. In my Year 10 exam when I thought I was going to fail and actually did surprising well, the night before the exam I spent all my time on photocopying a coke bottle label and photoshopping its ingredients etc. into answers or acronyms for answers that I would understand which would essentially remind me about information that I couldn't remember. I even practiced assorting certain answers into different parts of the label so I would not look suss staring into the bottle looking for answers and I could just glance or look in the corner of my eye when I knew where the answer I wanted was located on the bottle. I ended up not doing that but still, there are thousands of ways to cheat so having a clear drink bottle just makes everyones lives a little easier.

how do you photoshop the coke label, like it is made out of a special paper/plasticy thing, how?!?! haha

In regards to that, you can buy a iPod nano thing, which has a small screen and use it as a watch, and during the exams you can quickly do your things, hard to explain, hopeful yyou get the picture

here is the pic - http://weknowmemes.com/2011/12/how-to-cheat-on-a-test/

note to mods: i am not endorsing people to cheat :)

Really isn't that hard. You don't need A4 paper to print you just need to know how to position whatever material you are printing on and it's easier if you have a really good printer. I just bought a shiny plastic material that was similar to it, photocopied the original label, resized it etc. I wasted quite a few hours when I decided not to go down that path .. and money.

That's pretty impressive effort you put in though, don't think I would've been able to duplicate a coke bottle
