Alright, so i haven't done much these holidays for methods (only the set hw which is ch 1). I will be doing units 1/2 this year and was wondering if i should do something prior to the start of the year? i really want to get rank #1, how can i attain this?

You don't have to worry about rankings for unit 1/2 subjects. You only need to pass methods 1/2. Worry about 3/4 methods this time next year. For the time being maybe complete a few chapters at your own will. Probably just focus on building a solid 1/2 foundation for methods which will help you a lot for 3/4 next year.

As 'Sup' has already written, don't worry about rankings. What you should be focusing on is your understanding of concepts in Methods and making sure you have a good foundation for each topic so you can build upon those in Methods 3&4.
Having said that, if you want to do well in Methods then you should be organised and also review your work independently so you know where you've gone wrong. It's important to get into the habit of reviewing so you can fix up on any silly mistakes you may make during exams :)

As others have said, to do well in methods you have to be able to understand the concepts. I did well in methods 1/2 this year by listening really well in class, asking lots of questions you're unsure about and most importantly don't fall behind! Keep up with your class, a few friend of mine did really well at the start then slowly falling behind with the workload.... they ended up failing the exam. Read the textbook, do questions, attempt the hard ones and ask the teacher for help the next day if you couldn't do it.

Ofcourse, you could always get on AN and ask the users here, AN is a great place for asking questions when you need help because there are many high achievers here.

Wow, this is only 1&2 and you're worrying...

I guess there's really no point working ahead for 1&2, if you feel up to the challenge, perhaps you could start doing 3&4 work?
I'm not too sure if that's beneficial though.
I think you should just focus on 1&2 and get your foundation right.

hey guys, thanks for all your replys. Right now what can i do? i have done chapter 1 and i feel as though this isn't really sufficient, i thnk some others will have done more but i can never be sure. i had a look at chapter 2 but i dbf starting that, its all quadratics and easy (of which was our last topic of year 10), i was originally planning to finish first 3 chapters but chapter 2 turned me off. So what can i do now?

also what resources other then the textbook can you suggest? is the 'checkpoints' mandatory/beneficial ?

I'm in the same year level as you but i'm doing 3/4 this year.

Last year, when I was about to begin 1/2, I did Chapter 1 on the very last week before end of holidays.

That isn't recommended, don't do what I did, but really, if you can do the first 2-3 chapters, you'll be WAY ahead of everyone else.

Thinking about it, I was able to get a really good score on my first few tests (except one) without prior reading ahead of the concepts. What I mainly did on the holiday was consolidate all the work I did in Year 9 (your year 10 work in your case) and make sure that you pay attention in class!

Well my school uses Essentials for Methods (both 1&2 and 3&4) and they did Chapter 6 for holiday homework rather than Chapters 1&2.
Also Checkpoints isn't mandatory for Methods 1&2..... I didn't buy it and most of my friends didn't buy it (except for a few) but nothing drastic happened to their scores or anything. If you have a good grasp on concepts in Methods 1&2 then you'll do well c:

What you could do is pick a few questions from each exercise of that chapter to ensure you've got a solid understanding of all the concepts. Of course, you don't have to go through the whole chapter in one sitting (lol), but perhaps space it out over the next month or so of holidays.

i finished methods this year and what i recommend is not to completely slack off in 1/2 methods. quite a large portion of 3/4 methods is very similar to 1/2. there are few actual new topics. I did well in 1/2 which was a massive help in 3/4, 3/4 methods was much more relaxing for me tbh, because i understood 1/2 methods well.
