If youre looking at places near parkville, it also wouldnt be a bad idea to visit melb/rmit campus and have a look at the ad boards on there for share-houses/accomodation. Bigger main campuses = more ads.

How do you find share houses? Do you just google it? Or are they advertised somewhere in particular? Thanks :-)

You use Gumtree to find one room available in a house with people you don't know. You email them and if they like the sound of you they'll invite you over for a chat to see if they like you.

You can also use the Uni notice boards and online housing websites (specific to the Uni) to find a room in a sharehouse with other students.  These listings or posting (on a pin board on campus usually) are usually within good proximity to the campus.

If you want to/can afford to live alone,  College Square or Uni Lodge are good options. You can also use Domain.com.au or realestate.com.au and search to Rent studio apartments or 1 bedroom apartments in whichever suburbs you want.

Alternatively if you have a few mates who want to live in a similar area you can also use Domain and RealEstate and search for a 3/4 bedroom (whatever) and you all apply to the Real Estate agent together. Applying for properties is relatively painful business, especially if you're new to it (the paperwork, references, bond payment, etc) so if you go down that route youll be able to find further advice here in AN.

PS Gee your degree sounds freaking awesome, I would be so into doing that....!

I wish I could afford to live alone! I'll see how I go... May need to take (unwated!!) gap year.

Thanks for helping though, I'd love to rent a place with some friends so I think that might be the best option for now.

Oh thanks, I am so keen to start it! Was so excited when I found out it existed haha.

Don't be fooled, "student accommodation" is notorious for being stupidly overpriced. I'm currently by myself in a studio apartment on the corner of queensberry and lygon street, rent's $195per week not including bills. Comparatively, a three bedroom flat at the unilodge next to mc costs about $650. Most of the cheaper options at unilodge are twinshares. That means you're sharing a room not a flat, and you'll still be looking at around 200p/w. (This does include some bills though). With student accommodation you'll usually also be sharing facilities with the entire floor.

Another bit of insight, the flat i was staying at last year cost 400p/w and could very comfortably fit two people. It had a large bedroom, a study (that most owners convert into a second bedroom) and a large living area + balcony. The building was 1 year old when i moved in. A new student accommodation building (urbannest) is opening literally next door this year and a twinshare studio will cost $265per person/$530 for the flat.
For $250, you can easily rent out a nice 1 person studio apartment on barry street which is right next to it.

So don't worry, there are HEAPS of accommodation options available to you, and you shouldn't need to take a gap year to save up before you move out. The key is to start looking early. If you're confident you'll be at parkville, start trolling through domain.com/realestate.com once you're done with year 12 exams. That'll be when accommodation will be the cheapest. The same studio that I'm in is about $230p/w now. Stay away from gumtree/craigslist if you can help it. A lot of the time stuff there is fine, but the last place i was at was from gumtree and it was an absolute nightmare.
