BPsych(Hons) Timetable Issue
« on: January 21, 2014, 11:23:27 am »

So this year I'm undertaking a Bachelor of Psychology with Honours at Monash Clayton.
I'm currently enrolling now and I'm up to making my timetable however I'm having several issues.
There is a subject available called PMH1011 - Mental health in the community ( http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/2014handbooks/units/PMH1011.html ) which is available in Semester One as a 'non-psychology' elective, however there is no follow up for semester two, which means I'd have to take a new subject in semester two which seems to be inconvenient as I am unable to find any subjects commencing in semester two without having begun in semester one.(As in having a '____ 1', 'Introduction too ____' that I will be unable to do)
Does anyone know what I could do in this situation? I called Monash and I was given quite an ambiguous answer.
Also, I was told by Monash over the phone that somewhere on the site there is a list of subjects I'm not allowed to do because of the Psych units I'm doing. I'm interested in doing Behavioral studies as a non-psychology elective but when I called Monash, they said I can't because it's too similar to Psychology, however I can't find this page and I don't want to pick any other subjects that I'm not allowed to do.
If anyone could please help me out that would be wonderful, thank you.

Hi Luriyu!

Going by the list of recommended non-psych electives in the handbook, I've worked up a unit plan for first year that you might like to follow:

Semester 1
PSY1011 - Psychology A
BIO1011 - Biology I
PMH1011 - Mental Health in the Community
ATS1281 - Understanding Crime OR ATS1365 - Introduction to Sociology I OR ATS1371 - Life, Death, and Morality (Introduction to Philosophy A)

Semester 2
PSY1022 - Psychology B
BIO1022 - Biology II
ATS1282 - Criminal Justice in Action: Police, Courts and Corrections
ATS1835 - Time, Self, and Mind (Introduction to Philosophy B) OR ATS1366 - Introduction to Sociology II

All of these electives are subject to you chopping and changing them, but keep in mind that BIO1022 cannot be taken without having previously completed BIO1011.

Keep in mind though that there are so many options for you to take as non-psych electives from any faculty. I recommend you take a look through here to find some units that might take your interest.

Good luck, and feel free to PM me if you have any questions :)

Hi, thank you so much for your detailed reply!
I'm interested in doing that exact layout but I have one other question,
If I do ATS1365 - Introduction to Sociology in semester one as my 3rd elective (Biology I and Mental health as my other two) Can I pick up ATS1282 - Criminal Justice in Action: Police, Courts and Corrections without of doing TS1281 - Understanding Crime?

With regards to taking units that follow each other or are equivalent to each other in two semester, as far as I know there is no such pre-requisite for most first year units in Arts, that you have to have taken the 1, to undertake the 2. When it comes to second year unit, provided you wish to undertake that major the units count for is when you may have a problem because then you need the 2 first year units to progress.

Most psych students I know, take Bio, Psych (obvs), Sociology, and Criminology as their 4 streams.

And I was going to suggest you pick Sociology II which goes under a different name this year, but Alon already did it. If you dont want do sociology units as a minor, you can always do random first year units that look interesting.

EDIT: Luriyu, thats just the unit in South Africa- the equivalent unit. Which just means that you cant do that unit if you've already done the equivalent in South Africa or vice versa. Its a Prohibition, not a Prerequisite. Which means you should be able to do ATS1282 without having done 1281 :)

According to the handbook entries for those units, ATS1282 does not have any prerequisites so you probably could do it without taking ATS1281.

All Clayton Arts courses, as far as I know, start with ATS. It seems that AZA is Arts in South Africa. The purpose of the Prohibition is that its almost unfair and illogical to do the same units twice, just because they have different course codes, just to clarify for you

Thanks so much both of you for your help!
Yeah lets just pretend I didn't mention AZA1282 as I had a dumb moment...
This was really helpful, I think I'll do what you suggested and take up Criminology in second semester
Thank you again  :)  :)
