Classes and timetabling
« on: January 26, 2014, 11:19:10 am »

Hi! So I'm starting at Melbourne this year and I just have a few questions about how I should timetable my classes.

1. How early can a lecture start and how late can it end, like what time?
2. If a subject has two lectures a week, should I put the tutorial after both lectures? Is putting it before the lectures or in between okay?
3. Will I be late to lectures if I timetable them back to back and the buildings at like on the different sides of the campus? Does anyone care if you're late?
4. Do people eat in lectures? :D
5. Other things to keep in mind when timetabling?

Sorry if some of my questions are stupid :/ Would be great if anyone could answer even just one of these questions haha thanks in advance!

6. Try not to give yourself crazy days just to get a day off. I remember my sem 1 timetable for Tuesday being 9-6:30 with a 1hr break so yeah pretty bad :(

Sorry if some of my questions are stupid :/ Would be great if anyone could answer even just one of these questions haha thanks in advance!
1. Lectures can start at 8am and usually last lecture starts around 4 or 5?
2. Doesn't matter if tutorial is before or after or in between since they usually cover the retrospective week.
3. Yeah you might be late but depends how fast you are and how far you need to walk. Lectures start 5 minutes after the designated time and finish 5 minutes early to try to allow people to come on time.
For large lectures like chem or bio, no one really cares if you're late but if it's a small lecture theatre, it can be a big embarrassing copping the glares from everyone in the room.
4. Usually no if I recall correctly, but during my Japanese lectures people at the back were chucking down sushis and coffees LOOOL

assignments are usually turned into assignment boxes (like giant mail boxes). Your tutors will tell you whre the assignment box for your subject is.

1. 8 start and some go pretty deep in the afternoon and not too bad.
2. Putting a tutorial between or before the lectures is fine.
3. Yes, you probably will be. People don't normally give a rats if you're late, though some lecturers are a little nuts so might...As has already been suggested though, you may incur the wrath of everyone in the room if it's a small lecture.
4. If it's loud food:

5. If you've got pracs or workshops or anything like that, bear in mind that they may not run each week. So when you're planning, try not to put lectures around a prac in particular, otherwise you'll have a massive break. I had a biol prac in between lectures and a Spanish tutorial and that sometimes meant a 4.5 hour break...

If you're eating loudly or speaking to someone next to you while the lecturer is talking during a subject I'm not even taking in a lecture theatre on the other side of the campus I will fly across the University to yell at you.

Ugh, I remember one day I hadn't had time to eat before class so I bought sushi on the way to uni and tried to eat it quietly BUT THEN I ACCIDENTALLY SQUASHED THE PLASTIC CONTAINER HALFWAY THROUGH THE LECTURE DURING A PAUSE AND I GOT SO MANY STINK EYES Q_Q Don't risk it! If you really have to eat in lectures, bring food that doesn't make noise and people won't mind at all (but if it's a smaller theatre with a no-food policy then the lectures may tell you off; many of the larger ones have no-food policies but lecturers don't see the people eating/don't care).

Can you ask the lecturers questions after the lecture? Like, physically go down to them to ask them stuff? Or are they always in a hurry to rush off?

Also, is it the lecturers who set the assignments and tests?

Are you allowed to email your lecturers to ask them questions, or can you only email the people who take your tutes?

^ thanks

also, why does the student portal not work all the time? It's not very reliable. I'm starting to think there's a problem with my login details...

You could write a thesis on this. Nobody knows.

This can depend upon the lecturer but most of the time they're very friendly and happy to see that students are so keen. Just (obviously) be respectful and don't keep them there for too long because they might have another class/meeting/appointment for rolling around in their piles of cash monies. If you have a lot of questions you can go to their consultation hour, which is a period each week they set aside for answering student questions for a particular subjects, usually 1v1.

i like the idea of a consultation hour

EDIT: one more thing: what 'grants' does melbourne uni offer, financial wise? As in, when is it possible to apply for a grant?

Regular grant applications open at the end of this month (thanks extremely attractive guy at the desk at uni for telling me that, scribble and Ballerina can confirm he was extremely good-looking) and you use a single application form to apply for ALL of them! Scholarships are rarer and harder to get, and the majority are for honours or postgraduate students. Grant link: http://services.unimelb.edu.au/finaid/loans/grants/general
