John Monash School - Selective School?

Hi,
I was wondering if John Monash school is good. I've had a look at its past couple years of VCE results, and it seems to me that its results from 2011-2013 have gone down.

Also, some of these selective schools such as Nossal & Suzanne Cory, they are just barely better than Balwyn High this year in terms of results...I thought they were supposed to be better?

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I am considering taking the exams to try out for them.

Thanks

For John Monash, they actually didn't have any year 12s in 2011 so their overall results were based on the 1 or 2 subjects each year 10/11 student did that year, making the results a bit inflated.
Similar to this, Suzanne Cory will have their first year 12 cohort this year.
I guess selective schools are "better" due to their competitive environment which can drive students to work harder and achieve higher, but in terms of teaching/ facilities I wouldn't put them too far ahead of other good public schools (like Balwyn).
2012-2013: VCE, Melbourne High School

Well given that JMSS starts accepting students in Year 10 compared to the other selective schools (E.g MHS/Mac.Rob/Nossal), you'd expect them to be better than JMSS because of that reason (sure there are people who don't apply for those schools and just apply for JMSS who are insanely smart as well but majority of people who do sit the JMSS exam have sat an entrance exam before).

Can't say much about Suzanne Cory since it's just their Year 11 cohort but Nossal and JMSS are roughly the same in terms of VCE results (if that's what you're looking at) but VCE results shouldn't really influence your decision imo.

If you were thinking of trying out for JMSS then I would suggest you think about it a bit carefully because there is a big change in teaching style (which some like and some don't) so you'd have to get used to that pretty quickly but the people here are really friendly (and getting more sociable as the years go by which is insanely freaky LOL) and such so you wouldn't really have a problem fitting in or anything :)

^Pretty much this. There's a competitive nature at selective schools and I can't say much about other selective schools but JMSS facilities are limited to an extent (building) but you get to do other things that others can't do so it balances out for our school imo.

I heard select-entry schools get more funding from the government, not sure if true lol

There are also other things to consider before trying out for a school, such as the distance from where you live and whether the schools are teaching the VCE subject that you want to do. Schools shouldn't be judged based on the ranking alone, there are other things to take into account as well.

Yeah not sure if it's true as well but I've had a look at My School (don't know how reliable it is but it's the closest I can find) in terms of funding which each school gets (you can search up a school and look up their finances). It hasn't been updated with 2013 information but information about each school extends from 2008 - 2012.

This is probably obvious, but I would be careful judging school's by their result fluctuations over short periods of time, especially very new schools like you select schools you mentioned. For the reasons posted above and also because very often fluctuations in results over short periods of time can be attributable to the overall skills/motivation of the cohort each year as over short periods the teaching staff and style are likely to be the same-so the support which got student's good marks is still there.

There are too many factors involved to just deduce whether a school/the resources/teaching staff is "good or bad" from a median ATAR.

I've been really impressed with some of the non-selective schools getting very good results because the students aren't necessarily "picked" for their academic ability. They must be doing something right to get good overall results each year.

I wonder how these new selective schools will go in the next few years?

I agree, my school is a low fee Catholic College and we consistently do better than a lot of expensive elite private schools (like Wesley and Xavier and we are usually par with Korowa). I think what makes my school do so well is that we are all very supportive of each other and we have a fantastic team of teachers. I think the principal is pretty careful in hiring the right people to teach us.
