Can anyone who is tutoring English give me some advice on this: I'm thinking of using past texts for external evidence. For example, if I'm working on Identity and Belonging as the context, can I use "Witness" as an external example? The film is no longer on the 2014 English list. I mainly focused on creative pieces in high school so I'm not too hundred percent sure about expository writing (in terms of evidence/ examples).
Thanks!
You are allowed to use other texts, just make sure they're not of the Section A (Text Response) part of the exam. But you can't do this in replace of your chosen text(s). By all means reference it once or twice, but don't build a piece around it, as you won't get credit. It's better to use real world/historical/anecdotal evidence, and tie that together with the given text.
I wrote a practice piece once where all my evidence came from literary characters and situations (I know, english nerd, so sue me) and while it was an "interesting read," you're meant to be making comments on universal truths and humanity as a whole, so sticking purely to one type of source is insufficient. So long as 'Witness' is just one of many external examples you should be fine.
I've found referencing either classic texts or ex-VCAA listed books to be preferable, since its a shortcut to the assessor; you won't have to go into too much explanation, as most will be familiar with these allusions.
Good luck
