35 Study Score - where should I be looking?

Hey all, just wondering, possibly for past students who have passed on a higher study score of a 35 for English, where should I be looking at in terms of grading?

We're studying Twelve Angry Men for our text response, whilst we have The Quiet American and The Life of Galileo for our context essays, I'm pretty sure. The SAC is a little over two weeks away from now, (Twelve Angry Men on Conflict), and our teacher so far isn't of much help. I understand the requirements of a text response calls for an in-depth understanding of the text, but I feel like it's a bit too much at this point. I'm afraid we'll run out of time. So to anyone who has done Twelve Angry Men; where should I look at within the book?

Also, I'm not aiming for a massive ATAR. I'm only looking for a 70 ATAR if possible; achievable from a 35 in English/Further/I&E with a 30 in Biology. But I am trying my hardest at this point.

Last year I nearly failed; I fell into a cycle of not attending at 3+ days a week for nearly 3 months, although my Unit 1 grading helped me over the line. So studying hard & smart at this point is taking a toll. Any advice on how to keep consistent with this?

Thanks again for any responses,

hey ephemera,

what do you mean "where should I be looking at in terms of grading"? do you mean what essay scores you need to achieve? if so, i think you will need to be getting about 7/10 for essays for the exam and probably B+/A for SACs.

in regard to on how to keep consistent, make sure you are constantly writing essays for english - at least 1-2 a week. and make sure you are getting constant feedback for your essays and improving your writing standard. look at past students' essays who have done well in english and see how they write - this will be very helpful :)

all the best, i'm sure you will be fine :)

Hmm, I think that's achievable. My GAT last year estimated a ~37ss, & the end of year exam I managed an A. Just want to keep it up, it's quite a worry.
& sweet, I'll take a look at some VCAA past prompts then. :)

Thanks!

WOT? 7/10 for SACS to only get a 35? Jesus.

I guess it would be relatively easy(ier) for me as we get 6 prompts that we write on a few weeks beforehand so I can just write on them and memorise my ideas and quotes.

7/10 is about right actually. Though each school scales their subjects differently; a 7 isn't worth the same across the state. And your marks are moderated and standardized into oblivion anyway. Also your exam performance is worth 50% and will have much more of an influence in determining your score.

Basically stressing about marks is a big waste of time because no one understands VCAA. Not even VCAA. So don't panic about whether your SAC mark was a 6 or a 7, so long as you're working consistently throughout the year, and you use what you've learned in SACs to improve upon in the exam, you'll be set :)

Yeah, like I did well for last year but I've gone blank coming into this year to which I'm just trying to remember all the structures again.
I think I can get a 70 if I try, but I don't know what I'm particularly doing that'll get me an edge over my classmates. Got to look for strategies... hm.

Thanks for the advice though. I'll definitely grab some prompts and get some practice essays/paragraphs marked. :)

Well, you're on ATAR Notes, that's an advantage!

Practice really does make perfect, or as close to it as someone in year 12 can be expected to get.
