I did Methods and Specialist in the same year and I think it made Methods a lot easier for me. Pretty much all of the calculus in Methods is taught to a higher level in Specialist, and once you have a good handle on that stuff then the rest of the course is pretty straightforward.

I can't speak for Further as I didn't do it. But I am guessing that someone who is capable of 50 probably would be able to do quite well in Methods and possibly Specialist too depending on the student/school. 50 raw is pretty serious business.

Melb Grammar? That's a very strong cohort. You should be fine to get a 50 even in spesh if you put the work in, of course.

Highly personal opinion here, but I tend to think that the popular opinion that Further is the easiest, while Spesh is the hardest has some credibility to it. If a student does all 3, then the dominant trend would probably be that the Further raw score is the highest, while the Spesh raw score is the lowest.

If someone scored close to 50 for Further in year 11, I would perhaps think that they have the mathematical ability to achieve a 40+ in Methods in year 12. Can't really say anything about their Spesh performance though, since the gap in difficulty and difference in coursework is quite substantial.

I didn't do Further though, so this is all speculation and second-hand experience.

Just wondering what our thoughts are when it comes to an individuals ability to do well in further maths i.e 50 for example in year 11, does this hold any indication of how well they may do in Methods and Specialist in year 12?
Sort of. So I did both Methods and Further in Year 11 and I'm doing Specialist this year (Year 12).

I personally feel that the benefits of scoring high in further relate to minimizing silly mistakes and errors. In further, as I'm sure you are aware, if you want to score 45+ very few marks can be lost over both exams. Being able to not make silly errors (on simple questions) can be very beneficial for Methods and Specialist (especially Specialist due to the competition at the top end). Now to the concepts. A strong Further student conceptually may not be able to fully grasp the concepts of Methods and Specialist (where a few topics overlap), because the content of Further is just a lot simpler.

So basically, high scoring further student have the benefits of knowing that they can minimize silly mistakes (helpful in exams), but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will understand the concepts of the more challenging maths.

As someone who fits your description perfectly, you can have a look at my results in my signature. I guess Further really helped to instil good exam habits, especially reading questions carefully, producing neat, logical and cohesive workings, producing answers in the correct form and relating the answer back to the context of the question. These skills are similarly required in Methods and Specialist and definitely helped in that regard. :)

Congrats on your scores again  :) :) :)
So does that mean, that you were ranked 1 in all your subjects? If not rank 1, is it still possible to get scores similar to yours?
Thanks

In those subjects, yes, I was ranked first in each of them. Getting study scores like mine when not in rank 1 will ultimately depend on your actual rank, the strength of your cohort and your exam performance.

I wasn't rank 1 (and possibly not rank 2) for Further. Next highest SS was a 48. It's definitely possible, though it would depend on the actual gaps in your SAC scores (yes, those matter) and the strength of the top end of your cohort.

As for your original question, I'd say there's a very strong correlation between Methods and Spesh. While the content is Further is a quite different, there is a large overlap in the type of thinking needed, so you'd generally see the high-scoring Further students also did rather well in the other two subjects.
