quick question on decay equations

[Einstein]

Hey guys, say when write out beta decay (or alpha), like this

7-carbon -> 8-Nitrogen + 0 , -1 B      example of beta decay, do we have to write energy at the end of it like this

7-carbon -> 8-Nitrogen + 0 , -1 B + energy

i know if the daughter is still unstable after alpha/beta and undergoes gamma, but is energy needed? will i lose makes for not having it their?

ps. the 7 and 8 for carbon and nitrogen are the atomic numbers
