Apparently to get into JD for melbourne uni you need a 99+ atar as well as maintaining an H2A (75%WAM) average across your undergraduate study. I'm planning on doing commerce, majoring in finance and marketing. Anyone out there who has done the BCom and willing to share their expertise? :)? This is presuming I get a 99+ atar though :P

Presumably you are a diligent and intelligent person judging by your goals.
Provided you cope well with the transition to university (ie stay mostly focused on study, with some social thrown in - a lot of undergrads get caught up in the social fun and drinking that comes with Uni life, it's great fun but not if you want high grades) - as long as you stay relatively focused, 75% avg won't be difficult for you to maintain. How much study that will involve depends on your individual aptitudes and strengths/weaknesses but certainly 75% is achievable.

If you can achieve a 99 atar - 75 wont be difficult to achieve. Just go to every lecture and tutorial, do all the assignments and homework questions and you should be fine for the exams.

Bear in mind the 99 atar and 75 wam is only for a full fee place; and given the state of employment in the legal industry; id think again about dumping 100k on a law degree. Ive been speaking to several jd kids who graduated last yr, and even at MLS - only 15% of the cohort received clerkships after graduation.

"indicative cost of the standard 3 year program for students commencing in 2014 is $110,162*."
ARE YOU FREAKIN SRS?!? I only just realised...

In that case I'll probably go for the monash Bcom/LLB then. I'll do the Melbourne JD only if I get like 99.9, however the odds of this happening are astronomical :P

My want to do law because my dad runs a law firm. But I want to broaden my opportunities with a commerce degree.

Thanks to both who answered! Appreciated it

Convenient certainly but make sure you're actually interested in law yourself, too.
Law is a tough degree and an even tougher career - make sure YOU want to do it because that's where the motivation comes from.
I know this is probably why you're taking commerce too :)

You could just apply for postgraduate law the normal way without using a guaranteed entry pathway and take the LSAT...if you want to do your BCom at Melb beforehand.

Because it's obviously very competitive and there is no guarantee I'll get in.

Life doesn't have many guarantees. If you're happy with the Monash option then go for that! If you really want the JD then sit the LSAT.

Theres also the option of the monash jd after a b.comm at melb. Cut off for csp is around a 6.4 gpa - which is roughly 75 anyway.

Consider that an option too if you get an atar in the range between 95-98.
